Here he was not used and returned to the second division. There he knew how to convince, however, and was appointed to the Swedish national team. On August 26, 1945 he played for the first time for the national team in the 7-2 win over Finland in Ullevi .

In 1946, Bäckvall tried a second attempt at AIK Solna in the first division. This time he was able to win a regular place in the team and helped when the club established itself in the front part of the Allsvenskan in the second half of the 1940s. In 1949 and 1950 he also won the Svenska Cup with the team and was able to recommend himself for the national team again. On May 13, 1949, he ran for a second time in the national jersey when the English national team was defeated 3-1.

Then came the 1950/51 season : The club ended the season level on points with tenth IF Elfsborg and even had the same goal difference as the southern Swedes. However, the club from Stockholm had scored four goals less and surprisingly had to relegate. With seven goals, Bäckvall contributed his part to the direct return to the Allsvenskan. He then played for AIK in the first division for two years.

Coaching career

1954 Bäckvall was player-coach at Hagalunds IS in the third division. After two years he returned to AIK, where he worked as a youth coach. In 1958 he returned to the field and worked as a player-coach for the third division club Östers IF . In 1959, after promotion to the second division, he finally hung up his football boots and now sat exclusively on the dugout at the club. In 1961 he reached with the team the relay victory in the second division and appeared in the promotion games against Djurgårdens IF , Högadals IS and GIF Sundsvall , but only finished last.

In 1963 they failed again in the promotion games and Bäckvall moved to league rivals Kalmar FF . There he worked for three years, but could only achieve table positions in the lower midfield.

In 1967 he took over the coaching position at IK Brage . In his first season he reached the promotion games again. Behind Åtvidabergs FF and his old employer Östers IF, the team finished third without scoring or points, the game against bottom of the table Sandvikens IF was no longer played. After a fifth and a fourth place, he went to third division Krylbo IF . In 1971 the club was relegated to the fourth division and Bäckvall ended his coaching career.
