Life

Bertold Suhner was the son of Bertold Suhner . In 1939 he married Mabel Rose Watts, daughter of Wilfred Edward Watts. He completed a degree in mechanical engineering at the ETH Zurich . Suhner built up the department for high-frequency cables in his father's company. In 1943 he then founded his own company, Metrohm AG in Herisau. After an initial struggle for survival, it rose to become the second most important company in Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It became one of the world's leading suppliers of electronic measuring devices for chemistry . At the end of the 1960s, Suhner retired from the company's management. To prevent a takeover by interested parties outside the canton, in 1982 he contributed his share capital to a foundation for cultural purposes. As a patron for nature conservation and cultural purposes, he set up two other foundations. Suhner received his doctorate in 1984 from the University of Basel with a thesis on infrared spectroscopy in mineralogy . He bequeathed his mineral collection to the Herisau community.
