Betray My Secrets was a band from Munich that combined metal and dark rock with oriental, Far Eastern and African elements and called their style "Ethno-Metal".
history
The band was founded by Stefan Hertrich , founder and longtime singer of Darkseed . The drummer was Harald Winkler, the second co-founder of Darkseed, guitar and bass was taken over by Christian Bystron, guitarist at Megaherz .
In 1998, Serenades Records, a sub-label of Last Episode , to which u. a. Graveworm , The Dreamside and Dies Irae were part of the 7 ″ single Oh, Great Spirit . A year later the debut album Betray My Secrets followed on the same label . The “harsh metal sound” resembles that of Samael in some places , the list with the other instruments reads with sitars , tabla percussion , Indian bamboo flutes , piccolo flutes from Nepal and Chinese sheet metal percussion “like the inventory of all of East Asia”, according to the reviewer of the metal hammer .
No other Betray My Secrets releases have appeared since. With the follow-up projects Shiva In Exile and Spiritual, Hertrich continued the musical direction.
style
The Internet portal Vampster describes the musical direction of Betray My Secrets as a “wild mixture of folklore sounds from all over the world and metal”. The self-designation as "Ethno-Metal" is described by Wolfgang Schäfer from Rock Hard as a coherent classification. Schäfer describes the elements as familiar, but "elements that otherwise serve at best for background music [...] come to the fore here and stand on an equal footing with guitars staged in the best Rammstein style [...]." The online magazine metal .de emphasizes the connection between metal and " sitars , tabla percussions and various flutes, as well as singers from distant countries". The vocals are neatly arranged and presented in several voices up to chorales and chants , as well as supplemented by growling borrowed from Death Metal . Schäfer describes the rhythm as crisp . A "subtle keyboard carpet" is highlighted as a further element that determines the sound.
