Better Than Us (original title: Russian Лучше, чем люди Lutschsche, Tschem ljudi ) is a Russian science fiction - television series from the year 2018th

action

The story takes place in the year 2029, when androids help people in various areas of the household and even replace them in many simple occupations. However, they have to adhere to Isaac Asimov's three laws of robotics .

China's one-child policy has led to a critical shortage of marriageable women. Therefore, an engineer was hired to design an advanced android called Arisa, which should be able to develop emotional intelligence . Arisa should be able to be used as the wife and mother of adopted children . In addition, she should be able to protect her family, to which she also belongs, from danger. However, Arisa is sold to the fictional Russian robot company CRONOS.

Arisa accidentally kills a man at CRONOS who tried to use her as a sex robot and then escapes. She meets little Sonja Safronowa and automatically registers her as a user, thus becoming the guardian of Sonja’s family.

The series follows three storylines:

  • the life and emotional development of Arisa in the Safronow family and the conflicts with the father and forensic doctor Georgy Safronow, who has to struggle with several family and professional problems
  • the son of the family, Yegor Safronow, who, together with his girlfriend Shanna, is part of the “Liquidators” terrorist group, who are rebelling against the rule of androids.
  • the secrets of Viktor Toropov, the head of CRONOS, and the company itself

Production and broadcast

The shooting began in the summer of 2016 and ended in 2018. The screenplay was written by Andrej Dschunkowski. The production was carried out by the media company Yellow, Black and White in cooperation with Sputnik Vostok Production .

The series premiered on the Russian television channel Perwy kanal on November 23, 2018. The streaming provider Netflix included the series in its offer and dubbed it in German and English, among other things. It is the first Russian television series to be released by Netflix as Netflix Originals .

The German premiere of the entire first season on Netflix was on August 16, 2019, and the second season was released on Netflix on August 24, 2019.

Netflix lists the 8 episodes each of the first and second season together as "Season 1", there is no "Season 2". This count is also used in some other sources, so that often only a first season with 16 episodes is listed. The series was apparently produced in the original as two seasons with 8 episodes each.

Cast and dubbing

The German-language synchronization was carried out by Berliner Synchron on behalf of Netflix. The dialogue book as well as the direction was done by Dirk Müller .

reception

The series was recognized for its depth of character, emotional attachment, and acting. Because of the setting, it is also compared with the series Real Humans - Echte Menschen or Humans . Above all, the emotional ability of robots is questioned and conveyed in an entertaining and compassionate way. The robot countermovement raises the question of whether the androids are a curse or a blessing for humans.
