The Bettina-von-Arnim-Schule (formerly Bettina-von-Arnim-Oberschule) is an integrated secondary school (previously comprehensive school ) with upper secondary school in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf, district of Märkisches Viertel .

history

The school was named after the German writer Bettina von Arnim . In 1970 the teacher and later headmaster Karl Wagner founded the school in Reinickendorf and directed it until 1979. He was a student of the reform pedagogue Peter Petersen and transferred ideas from the experimental school in Jena ( Jena Plan ) to the secondary level of Bettina-von-Arnim -School. In 1972 the first year came to this school. At that time the school was still housed in the round pavilions of the Max-Eyth-Realschule in Alt-Wittenau and was called the 2nd [comprehensive] secondary school. In 1975 the school moved to a new building at Senftenberger Ring 49. In 1981 the name was changed to Bettina-von-Arnim-Oberschule. Ten years after moving into the new building, exposure to asbestos was found there and the school building was closed. In 1991 the Berlin school administration built a new school village about 300 meters away. Ten houses for the different age groups as well as multi-purpose rooms were built there. A sports hall is 600 meters away, the sports field around 800 meters. Since the school year 2010/11, the school has been called Bettina-von-Arnim-Schule (integrated secondary school with upper secondary school).

The Bettina-von-Arnim-Schule maintains contact with various foreign schools and enables the students to carry out exchanges. Every year there is a two-week language and cultural exchange with the Collège Rousseau in Geneva, Switzerland. In addition, interested middle and upper school students regularly take part in the language exchange programs of the Franco-German Youth Office (Sauzay program, Voltaire program) and are supported and supervised by their teachers.

There are also contacts with a Jewish school in New York City , a high school in Poland and one in Canada .

The school also works with several projects and companies within Germany, including the Berlin branch of Otis , which offers internships for the school. Next to the school is the Atrium music school, with which the school also maintains close contact. The Gesobau housing association also maintains contact with the school. In cooperation with Gesobau, a small art pavilion was opened behind the school.

particularities

A special feature of this school is that disabled and non-disabled children can learn together. The Bettina-von-Arnim-Schule is also one of only six schools in Germany where the intermediate level (7th – 10th grade) has a special model status. Each of the four years consists of two large groups with 120 students each. The large groups are again divided into eight main groups with 15 students each. The home groups are project groups. They are stable for the entire intermediate level, while the lessons in the subjects are organized in differentiated courses. All subjects are divided into so-called subject groups. Each student can choose his or her course in which subject group (subject group 1: German / History / Geography, FG 2: English / Mathematics, FG 3: Physics / Chemistry / Biology / Industrial Studies and FG 4: Music / Fine Arts / Sport) he wants to occupy which teaching focus according to the "ANKER election system" in 40 min. times x teaching units per week. Therefore, in addition to the usual certificates, there are also certificates every quarter that are not official, but give the students a good overview of their performance.

The school takes part in the Berlin program for in-depth professional orientation (BvBO) and offers its students support in professional orientation and career choice.
