history

The criterion in downtown Betzdorf took place for the first time in 1996 and first took the place of a race for the German amateur elite. There were 52 drivers at the start.

Over the years, the circuit race became more and more important in the German cycling calendar. Only in 1998 the race had to be canceled due to a construction site on the actual course. At the fourth edition in 2000, Bert Grabsch was the first GS I rider at the start. In the races that followed, the number of professionals increased steadily, for example in 2001 Udo Bölts proved his skills on the course.

In 2002 the race length was increased from 85 to 90 laps. The race was well-known with Jens Heppner , Jörg Ludewig , Patrick Sinkewitz and Michael Rich . This was also the case in 2003 and 2004. With Robbie McEwen , an international star entered the list of winners for the first time in 2005, the ninth edition.

In 2007 the race was held for the last time for a longer period of time for the male professionals, in 2008 it was held as a professional women’s race and won by Angela Henning .

After a three-year break, the City Night was re-launched on July 6, 2012 with the Kreissparkasse Altenkirchen as the new main sponsor, but without professional participation. The pure amateur race for classes A / B / C and (2014) also U17, with around 10,000 visitors, is still one of the sporting highlights in the victorious town of Betzdorf. A well-attended press conference takes place every year in the run-up to the event. The main class of A / B amateurs starts in the dark under floodlights.

The City Night has been held every two years since 2012. The RSC Betzdorf held the last races on July 18, 2014 and August 19, 2016.

The 16th edition of the City Night took place on August 10, 2018.
