history

Erzquell Brewery Bielstein

Today's Erzquell Brewery Bielstein was founded in 1900 by Ernst Kind, great-grandfather of today's managing partner Axel Haas, as Adler Brauerei GmbH . Ernst Kind had a spinning and tearing mill in Bielstein . Because this got into economic difficulties, he ventured a fresh start at the age of 50. He learned in the Bavarian Weihenstephan , the brewing of beer . After the construction of a water pipe , which still supplies soft spring water for the Bielsteiner beers , the first pilsner left the brewhouse on September 5, 1900 . In the founding year, the output was 15,000 hl.

During the First World War, aluminum cutlery for the army and leaf flour for the army horses was produced instead of beer. In 1920 Carl Haas, Kind's son-in-law , took over the management. In the 1930s, the brewery acquired a majority stake in the Siegtal brewery Burgmann & Wildenberg. In 1936 it was converted into a limited partnership. Since there was also an Adler brewery in Cologne, the name was changed to Bielsteiner Brewery in addition to the change in legal form . After the Second World War, beer production was resumed in 1948 under the management of Werner Haas. Extensive modernization measures were carried out in the following years. Zunft-Kölsch also expanded the product range. In 1976 the Bielsteiner Brewery was renamed the Erzquell Brewery. Axel Haas took over management from his late father in 1983. In the 1980s, investments were made in barrel and bottle filling. Today's brewhouse with copper kettles was put into operation in 1987. Today the brewery has 50 employees. The annual output of the Zunft Kölsch brand is 150,000 hl (2012).

On April 2, 2014, the Bundeskartellamt imposed fines on the Erzquell Brewery Bielstein, several other breweries in Germany and the Association of Rheinisch-Westfälischer Breweries for prohibited price fixing for beer in a beer cartel totaling 231.2 million euros.

Erzquell Brewery Siegtal

Today's Erzquell Brewery Siegtal was founded in 1885 by Hermann Burgmann and Heinrich Wildenberg as Siegtal Brewery Burgmann & Wildenberg oGH . The brewing location is Mudersbach-Niederschelderhütte. The company developed so quickly and positively in the first few years that capital was needed for expansion. In 1910, the founders converted their brewery into a stock corporation. During the Great Depression, the company ran into financial difficulties. Carl Haas, manager of the Adler brewery at the time, supported the brewery financially in 1930 and by deferring receivables from malt deliveries, thereby saving it from bankruptcy. In return, the Adler brewery received a majority stake in what was then Siegtal -Brauerei AG in the same year. From then on, Paul Schön took over the management of the brewery.

In 1950 the brewhouse was modernized. The output of the brewery, which now traded under the name Siegtal-Brauerei Schön & Co. KG, increased continuously in the 1950s. In addition to the Siegtal-Pils and "Siegtal Erzquell", a stronger brewed special beer, dark bock beer (Schwarzer Bock) and almost alcohol-free malt drink (Siegtal-Malz) were also produced. The brewery draws its brewing water from a spring in the Giebelwald above the brewery . The spring water is fed to the brewery via a four-kilometer-long water pipe and used in the brewing process without additives or treatment. In 1963 production exceeded 100,000 hectoliters. The brewery then had to be expanded again. In 1976 the Siegtal brewery was renamed Erzquell Brewery Siegtal. Axel Haas has been managing director of the brewery since 1979. In addition to Erzquell Pils, the Erzquell Brewery Siegtal produces "Erzquell Dark", a black beer exclusively for export. It has 50 employees (2005). The focus of sales is the Siegerland and the Westerwald.

Cooperation between the breweries

The process of concentration in the German brewing industry at the end of the 1960s led to the two breweries cooperating, although they maintained their independence. The "Erzquell Pils" brand was created as a result of the cooperation. As a result of the larger market volume, it was possible to use more advertising measures in order to position oneself better against competitors.
