Wiznitz district

The Wiznitz district ( Romanian : Vijniţa ; Ruthenian : Wyżnycia ) was a political district in the Duchy of Bukowina ( Austria-Hungary ). The district included areas in the northwest of Bukovina. The seat of the district administration was the municipality of Wiznitz (today: Wyschnyzja ). The area was added to Romania after the First World War and is now part of the Ukrainian part of Bukovina ( Chernivtsi Oblast ).

The modern political districts of the Habsburg Monarchy were created around 1868 in the course of the separation of the political from the judicial administration. The district of Wiznitz was formed in 1868 from the judicial districts of Wiznitz and Putilla . In addition, on November 1, 1898, the judicial district of Waschkoutz am Czeremosch was established in the area of ​​the Wiznitz district. The judicial district of Waschkoutz am Czeremosch was finally separated from the district of Wiznitz on October 1, 1903 and merged with the judicial district of Stanestie from the district of Storozynetz to form the district of Waschkoutz am Czeremosch .

The population in the Wiznitz district was 48,177 in 1869, and by 1900 it had increased to 71,631. In 1900, 53,561 of the population stated Ruthenian (74.8%) as the colloquial language, 15,173 spoke German (21.2%), 301 Romanian (0.4%) and 2,518 another language (3.5%). In 1900 the district covered an area of ​​1499.89 km² and three judicial districts with a total of 33 municipalities and 17 manor areas .
