District Clinic Regensburg (2007)

The Regensburg District Clinic ( BKR for short ) is a location for various specialist clinics and institutes sponsored by the Medical Institutions of the Upper Palatinate District - KU (medbo).

history

Brunnenhof of the Karthaus Prüll

In the buildings of the monastery of Kartause St. Vitus , which was secularized in 1803 , the so-called “Royal District Insane Asylum Karthaus-Prüll” was opened on January 1, 1852. Its director was initially Kiderle, then from 1860 to 1873 Friedrich Karl Stahl . In 1905/06 the writer Alfred Döblin worked there as an assistant doctor. In the years 1917 to 1933 an extensive reform took place under the director Karl Eisen . In this coercive measures such as isolation and fixation largely abolished. Tobacco cells were converted into single rooms and Tobacco departments into guard rooms . Furthermore, the patients were offered entertainment with cinema screenings and slide shows.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the time of National Socialism (German Reich 1933 to 1945), mentally ill people and other people classified as “life unworthy of life” were gassed in killing centers as part of a National Socialist murder program called “ Aktion T4 ” . In the course of the subsequent "decentralized euthanasia", patients were murdered directly in nursing homes. From 1940 to 1945, under the direction of Paul Reiss, at least 1,600 patients of the Karthaus-Prüll institution died either directly in the institution or after being transferred to the Hartheim Nazi killing center as a result of active killing, failure to provide assistance and malnutrition. The mortality during this time was six times the normal value. The activities were promoted by the secret agency Aktion T4 . In the Regensburg facility, 600 patients were forcibly sterilized on the basis of the law for the prevention of genetically ill offspring .

post war period

A second phase of reform began in 1965 and lasted until 1984. The wards were specialized and the diagnostic and therapeutic measures were diversified . In particular, a neurological and neuro- radiological department was created in 1973 and the first computer tomograph was installed in a German mental hospital in 1976 . From 1982 a forensic department was set up, which by 2007 had developed into the second largest clinic at the district clinic.

In 2006 the medbo GmbH - Medical Facility of the District of Upper Palatinate was founded and has been a member of the Regensburg District Hospital ever since. Since July 2013, Medbo, including the special hospitals for forensic psychiatry and pulmonary and bronchial medicine and the vocational school for nursing, has been run as a municipal company (public law institution).

The Clinic for Forensic Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy was opened in 2017. There has been a central emergency room for neurological and psychiatric emergencies since 2018.

The Regensburg District Clinic offers care phases A to F: From acute neurological care to neurological rehabilitation to long-term care in a special neurological nursing home.

In the special neurological nursing home HAUS 15 , people with severe craniocerebral injuries are mainly cared for after their neurological rehab has been completed (care phase F).

The Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Regensburg District Clinic treats people who have become criminals due to a psychological and / or addictive disease and who have committed their crimes in a state that reduces or is not responsible for their fault. The Forensic Psychiatry Research Department (Michael Osterheider) of the Regensburg Chair for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy works closely with the clinic.

The HAUS 5 nursing home for the mentally ill offers people who are chronically seriously ill a home.

The Vocational School for Nursing and Nursing Aid Regensburg trains around 160 nursing students annually on the premises of the district clinic. This makes it the largest vocational school for nursing in the Upper Palatinate. Action-oriented lessons, project lessons, scenic learning and independent learning form the basic pillars. The training concept was awarded 1st prize in the competition for innovative school development (ISI) by the Bavarian Ministry of Culture. Parallel to the nursing training, the students can acquire the technical college entrance qualification and study at the Ostbayerischen Technische Hochschule Regensburg as part of the dual study course "nursing" .

The Institute for Education and Personnel Development (IBP) is the largest provider of seminars on health topics in Eastern Bavaria. It looks after around 6,000 seminar and congress participants every year.

Museum: Vierzigmann Collection

The clinic houses a permanent exhibition of pictures made by patients in the 1920s and 1930s. The collection named after Adolf Vierzigmann (1878–1955) was opened in 2002.
