Biancone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The white wine variety Biancone is an autochthonous variety on the island of Corsica in France. There it is mainly grown in the area around Bastia in the north of the island. In Corsica, 18 hectares of vines were raised in 1999 , although the variety is not approved for the development of quality wines.

The very late ripening variety is very productive and makes simple white wines with high acidity . The wine is used in a blend with other grape varieties that lack acidity.

Attention: Biancone is also the synonym for the grape varieties Biancame , Biancone di Portoferraio , Fermana Bianca and Paga Debiti . The Biancone variety is not identical to these varieties.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy with white wool, yellowish-white in color with a slight reddish-bronze tinge. The yellowish young leaves are also hairy with white wool and are already heavily cupped.
  • The medium-sized leaves are five-lobed and clearly indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set very closely compared to the grape varieties.
  • The cylindrical grape is very large and shouldered. The round to slightly oval berries are medium-sized and almost whitish in color.

Biancone ripens around 40 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late. It is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
