Bibrocathol is a bismuth-containing drug from the group of antiseptics . It is used in the eye area , for example in the case of inflammation of the eyelid rims , seborrhea or colonization of staphylococci in the eye area. Bibrocathol subject in Germany the pharmacies duty and is under the trade names Posiformin ® offered as eye ointment with 2% active ingredient. It was formerly available as Noviform ® with 1, 2, 3 and 5% active ingredient content . It was patented in 1908 as an antiseptic by the Heyden chemical factory .

Presentation and extraction

The synthesis of Bibrocathol starts from catechol , which is completely brominated to 3,4,5,6-tetrabromopychol in the first step . The reaction with bismuth (III) oxide then gives the target compound in the second step.

Pharmacological properties

Bibrocathol, which is sparingly soluble in water, has extremely low penetration into the eye. There is no significant systemic absorption of Bibrocathol after topical application. Absorbed bismuth salts are mainly excreted via the kidneys. The mechanism of action discussed is the precipitation of proteins and the blockade of thiol groups in enzymes.
