The Big Bad Wolf in Busch Gardens Williamsburg ( Williamsburg , Virginia ) was a roller coaster on the model suspended coaster of manufacturer Arrow Dynamics , which on 15 June 1984 in the former Busch Gardens: The Old Country was opened. The roller coaster was the first permanently functional version of a suspended coasters type roller coaster, previous systems had significant construction defects. On July 24th, 2009, Busch Gardens announced the closure of the railway on September 7th, 2009.
Originally it was planned to build a comparable roller coaster from Schwarzkopf GmbH . Due to the bankruptcy of the company and problems in the test phase, the order was canceled. The foundations that had already been set for the route of the railway designed by Werner Stengel were used by Arrow, but the pillars that had already been completed were scrapped. Trains with two large gondolas for 14 people each were not used as planned by Stengel. As with The Bat , Arrow engineer Ron Toomer used trains with seven cars for four people each (two rows of two people). Shoulder straps were used as a restraint system on the three trains.
The 854 m long roller coaster was a major theme and took advantage of terrain jumps. The route led through a forest known as the “ Black Forest ”, past houses that looked like South German and across various watercourses. During the journey, the individual wagons of the trains swung to one side due to the centripetal force , so that the passenger had the feeling that he was colliding with the houses. After the second 31 m high lift hill , the train fell 24 m at speeds of up to 77 km / h onto a long steep curve over the lake called the “ Rhine River ”.
Despite the great popularity of the railway, the park tour decided to demolish the railway due to the sharp rise in uneconomical maintenance costs.
