Big Moose Lake , the origin of the Moose River , is a lake about five miles north of Fourth Lake of the Fulton Chain Lakes in the Adirondacks in Upstate New York . It is located partly in Herkimer County and partly in Hamilton County , thus covering parts of the Towns of Webb and Long Lake . To the southwest of the lake is the hamlet of Big Moose .

Known for its remoteness, climate and landscape, the lake is known as the infamous crime scene of the murder of Grace Brown in 1906. Alleged ghost sightings and the resulting media interest have contributed to this reputation.

geography

Located in the central west of the Adirondacks, Big Moose Lake covers an area of 5.03 km 2 . It is about 4.8 km long and about 1.5 km wide. The maximum depth of the lake varies between 9 and 21 m, and the average depth is 7 m.

The hamlet of Big Moose is southwest of the lake; other settlements nearby are Eagle Bay , Inlet , Old Forge, and Thendara . There are few roads so the shore is not heavily populated. The population density is highest during the summer months when vacationers arrive at their summer homes or stay at local hotels.

The lake and the surrounding region are a destination for leisure activities such as boating, water skiing, hiking in summer and for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter.

The 203 km 2 large Pigeon Lake Wilderness Area is located just east of the lake.

Fishing

Big Moose Lake is ideal for fishing for brook trout , arctic char , river perch , trout and splake . There is a state owned boat ramp on the south bank of West Bay.

history

vertical semicircular timber architecture at Covewood Lodge

The area around the lake was settled by whites mainly towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, which arrived after the construction of the first railway line through the previously largely uninhabited region of the Adirondacks. The first trappers and hunters became guides through the wilderness, and permanent camps and hotels were eventually established. Businessmen built private summer homes in the style of the Vanderbilts and Morgans Great Camps and brought their families here. Some of these accommodations still exist today, and the Big Moose Lake area is of historic importance for its unique use of half-round timber in the construction of lodges and cabins.

The Big Moose Lake is the background for the novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser . It is based on the true story of Chester Gillette, who was named for the murder of Grace Brown in the South Bay of Big Moose Lake in the early 20th century. Dreiser named the lake Big Bittern Lake in his novel , but he had visited Big Moose Lake and used it as a model for his novel. The Oscar- winning film A Place in the Sun, starring Elizabeth Taylor , Shelley Winters, and Montgomery Clift , was shot from the book. The murder of Grace Brown also became notorious for alleged ghost sightings around the lake. In 1996, an episode in which the tragedy was re-enacted was shown within the television series Unsolved Mysteries . On July 11, 2006, a wreath-laying ceremony was held in South Bay to mark the centenary of the assassination of Brown.

Another adaptation of the story comes from Jennifer Donnelly , who in her novel Das Licht des Nordens (2003; Ger. 2006) tells the plot from the perspective of a young girl who works in the Glenmore - a lodge on the lake. The lake and the surrounding places also play a role in Robert Tucker's 2013 novel Sasquatch Camp .

The area around the lake is known for its palisade -style buildings with vertical half-round timber.
