Inlet is a town on the western border of Hamilton Counties in the US state of New York . At the time of the 2010 United States Census , the Town of Inlet had 333 residents. The name is derived from the location of the eponymous hamlet at the eastern end of Fourth Lake, which belongs to the Fulton Chain of Lakes .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has an area of ​​171.9 km 2 , of which 161.1 km 2 is land and 10.8 km 2 (= 6.29%) is water.

The western border of the town forms the border with the Towns of Ohio and Webb in Herkimer County , the southern border is formed by the Moose River . That's where Morehouse is . The Town of Long Lake is on the northern border and in the northern part of the eastern border, and the Town of Arietta is bordered east by Inlet on the southern section.

The New York State Route 28 is running in east-west direction highway and the only trunk road within the Town.

The eight lakes Fulton Chain of Lakes , which is connected by a watercourse navigable by small boats, extends through Inlet to the neighboring areas. In the town there are:

  • Bug Lake - a lake north of Seventh Lake
  • Browns Tract Pond - a small lake on the northern edge of town with the state-run Brown Tract Pond Campground
  • Cascade Lake - a lake in the northeast corner of the town
  • Eagle Bay - a hamlet in Herkimer County on the western border of Inlet
  • Eagles Nest Lake - a lake north of Seventh Lake
  • Eighth Lake - the easternmost lake on the Fulton Chain, northeast of Seventh Lake
  • Fifth Lake - a lake at the hamlet Inlet
  • Fourth Lake - a large lake located partly within Inlet and partly in Herkimer County
  • Inlet - the eponymous hamlet is located on the eastern tip of Fourth Lake not far from the western border of the town and is the only settlement in the town.
  • Limekiln Lake - a lake south of the hamlet of Inlet, partly in Herkimer County
  • Lower Browns Tract Pond - a lake northeast of the hamlet of Inlet
  • Sixth Lake - a small lake east of the hamlet of Inlet
  • Seventh Lake - a lake east of Sixth Lake and the second largest lake on the Fulton Chain
  • Upper Browns Tract Pond - a lake northeast of the hamlet of Inlet

history

The award-winning novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser is based on the murder of Grace Brown and includes a scene in Inlet. In fact, although the murder took place in Punkey Bay on Big Moose Lake in 1906 , the perpetrator, Chester Gillette , was arrested after three days at the Arrowhead Hotel in Inlet. Gillette was sentenced to death in the electric chair in Auburn . The book was later made into a film with the title A Place in the Sun starring Montgomery Clift , Shelley Winters and Elizabeth Taylor .

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Inlet was inhabited by 406 people. The population density was 2.5 people per km 2 . There were 1003 housing units, an average of 6.2 per km 2 . The population in Inlet was 96.31% White , 0% Black or African American , 0% Native American , 0% Asian , 0.25% Pacific Islander , 3.20% said racial and 0.25% % named two or more races. 2.46% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.

The residents of Inlet were distributed to 188 households, of which 22.3% had children under 18 years of age. 59.6% of households were married, 5.3% had a female head of household without a husband and 31.4% were not families. 29.3% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.8% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.59.

The population was split into 18.2% minors, 3.0% 18–24 year olds, 29.6% 25–44 year olds, 30.5% 45–64 year olds and 18.7% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 women there were 106.1 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 107.5 men.

The median household income in Inlet was 32,574 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 37,361 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 29,063 compared with $ 15,625 for women. The per capita income was $ 21,076. 13.2% of the population and 7.9% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 15.4% of minors and 11.1% of those aged 65 and over.
