Bill Dillard

William "Bill" Dillard (* 20th July 1911 in Philadelphia ; † 16th January 1995 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter of Swing . He was later an actor and singer in musicals on Broadway, among others .

Dillard, who play the trumpet in essence, self-taught taught (with some classes in high school), moved with 18 years to New York and played in 1929 with Jelly Roll Morton (and took with him on). 1931 in the orchestra of Luis Russell , 1933 with Benny Carter and 1935 to 1937 with Teddy Hill , with whom he also toured in France and recorded in 1937. He played with Coleman Hawkins , Louis Armstrong and Leadbelly (1949 in France) and toured Europe with Count Basie .

He also recorded with Spike Hughes (1933), Bill Coleman , Red Allen , Roy Eldridge , Dizzy Gillespie and Django Reinhardt (1937), and played with King Oliver and Dickie Wells .

As early as 1941 he took part in the crime comedy (with All Star colored Cast and the band leaders Noble Sissle and Skippy Williams ) Murder with Music ; In 1946 he played a supporting role as a police officer in the comedy film House Rent Party directed by Sam Newfield. The film is considered lost.

In the early 1980s he was in Europe with the Fats Waller musical One Mo Time by Vernel Bagneri . On Broadway, he starred in Carmen Jones , Regina and Beggars Holiday .

He made his only recording as a leader in 1991 (Bill Dillard With Michael Bøving's Rhythmakers, Storyville 2002).
