background

After the release of the EP Try Honesty in 2001, the band went into the studio with Gavin Brown in 2003 to record their self-titled debut album under a new name. After Watoosh! But this was the second album that was released in 1999 under their old band name Pezz .

After the band renamed itself Billy Talent after the character of the film "Hardcore Logo", the band tried to stop using their ideas to perfection and turned away from prog rock .

Singer Benjamin Kowalewicz said: “We have tried in vain for years to find our own sound. It all only came together when we finally simply accepted each other for who we are. If you find your voice, everything else will follow by itself ”.

Guitarist Ian D'Sa noted, "When we started, it was more about relying on our uniqueness than emulating other bands." Laut.de wrote about their commercial breakthrough: "With their catchy punk rock melodies they win prizes in a row and fill concert halls all over the world."

review

laut.de criticized the album as not very innovative and judged that it was "hard alternative rock for 15-year-olds who are still in the process of finding their musical direction." However, the band is a well-rehearsed team that only adds to its name is wrong, “talent-free zone would be too much of a bad thing”. The band would know pretty well "how to build a normal alternative rocker fluidly and have been playing together for a number of years". You would hear them clearly: "Perfectly placed two-part refrains like in the Mitgröhl chorus of Cut The Curtains or the beautiful introduction of two harmonizing guitars in The Ex are not so easy to shake out ofyourfingers."

Armin Linder, on the other hand, praised the album exuberantly on plattentests.de "as if from one piece, without frills, without artificialities and without false vanities", which comes from "the gut, from the heart and with just as much brain" as it came from Rocking is necessary. “And the Canadians don't seem to care whether their debut is bursting with variety or not. No useless ballad, always to the full ".
