Bilohorodka ( Ukrainian Білогородка ; Russian Белогородка Belogorodka ) is a village in the Ukrainian Kiev Oblast with about 4,000 inhabitants. Together with the neighboring village Schewtschenkowe ( Шевченкове ) a district municipality is located only 10 kilometers west of Kiev .
Bilohorodka is best known for being on the site of the old Slavic city of Belgorod ( White City , see Belgorod or Belgrade ). This was founded in the 9th century at the latest and first mentioned in writing in 980. At that time, the village and its surrounding area were the personal property of the Grand Duke of Kiev Vladimir I , who had a palace and a fortress built here in 991, which became one of the strongest outposts in the defense of Kiev against nomads.
