Binstead is a village on the Isle of Wight . It is located in the northeastern part of the island, about two kilometers west of Ryde on the main road (A3054) between Ryde and Newport .

history

Binstead was mentioned as Benestede in the Domesday Book in 1086 . The village became known for the limestone , which led to the formation of quarries , whose landscape-changing effects are still visible in the village and its surroundings. The nearby Quarr Abbey derives its name from the English word for quarry, 'quarry'. The suffix 'pitts' is found here and there in names of houses and streets. These quarries were called 'pits'.

The earliest records of the quarries go back to the first Norman Bishop of Winchester . Walkelin received land from Wilhelm the Conqueror . He used the limestone that was broken here to build Winchester Cathedral , which was recorded in 1079. Limestone blocks from Binstead were later used in the construction of Chichester Cathedral , Romsey Abbey and parts of the Tower of London .

During the Napoleonic Wars , Daniel List, a local shipbuilder, built several ships for the Royal Navy , including the 36-gun frigates HMS Magicienne in 1812 and the HMS Tagus and HMS Tiber in 1813 .
