Bio-Engineered Supplements and Nutrition, Inc. (BSN) is an American manufacturer of nutritional supplements founded in 2001 and based in Florida . Since 2011, BSN has been part of the Irish Glanbia Group, which is also owned by the US dietary supplement manufacturer Optimum Nutrition .

history

The brand was founded in 2001 by Chris Ferguson and Scott James and started as a small nutritional supplement store in Delray Beach , Florida. Both founders had experience working in the gym business and were interested in bodybuilding themselves . In the early days, some of the employees worked without pay just to be part of the brand.

In 2011 BSN was acquired by the Glanbia Group for USD 144 million (equivalent to EUR 108 million). In 2008, Glanbia acquired the market leader Optimum Nutrition for 315 million US dollars . BSN was privately owned at the time and had 140 employees. The company had 2009 sales of $ 135.4 million and a profit of $ 10.1 million. This made BSN one of the top 25 largest dietary supplement manufacturers in the USA and, after Optimum Nutrition, the second largest buyer of whey protein in North America.

Products

In 2011, BSN was sold in 40,000 retail stores in the US. BSN products are available in 120 countries worldwide. In some of these countries, BSN has its own sales and marketing teams. They also have country-specific recipes for products. While the core business of Optimum Nutrition is protein powder and performance supplements, BSN also sells pre-workout products. The best-known products from BSN are the pre-workout NO-XPLODE and the protein powder Syntha-6, which were launched in 2004 and 2009.

Sponsorship

In 2008 the UFC announced a multi-year partnership with BSN as the "Official Nutritional Supplement Provider". In 2015 BSN was a partner of UFC fighter Conor McGregor . There were also partnerships with CrossFit athlete Rich Froning Jr. , basketball player Joakim Noah , automobile racing driver Tony Kanaan and heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter Cain Velasquez . BSN supports active and former members of the military with a 50% discount.

criticism

BSN was criticized for the effectiveness of its products in 2009 after an article in Sports Illustrated pointed out that the company was being sued in California in the United States . In this, BSN was accused of promoting the ingredient creatine ethyl ester malate (CEM3), which is allegedly contained in the products NO-XPLODE, Cellmass and Nitrix, which is not included. Jonathan Vennerstrom, Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center testified that the chemical structure of CEM3 published by BSN was chemically impossible, and Richard Chamberlin, Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine testified that the BSN-patented synthesis process for CEM3 would most likely not produce this substance. BSN responded to this criticism by stating that this would not change the effectiveness or quality of the products and that BSN no longer sold these formulations. The class action lawsuit ended in a settlement that provided class members eligible for refunds of up to $ 15 on CEM3 products, discounts on future purchases of $ 3 to 5, and / or free samples. In addition, BSN pledged to donate US $ 1 million of BSN products to a charity over the next five years.
