The biography portal is a multilingual biographical database freely accessible via the Internet . This indexes around 160,000 people, mainly in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, who are listed in historical-biographical articles in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (ADB), the New German Biography (NDB), the Austrian Biographical Lexicon 1815–1950 (ÖBL ), the Historical Lexicon of Switzerland (HLS), the Slovenska biografija , the Biographical Lexicon for the History of Southeastern Europe (BioLexSOE) , the Saxon Biography (SäBi), the Rhineland-Palatinate Personal Database (RPPD) and the Austrian Music Lexicon 1815–1950 (OeML) available. Around 110,000 articles are written in German, around 23,000 in French, around 23,000 in Italian and around 5,000 in Slovenian.

The biography portal was created in 2009 in cooperation between the Bavarian State Library , the Historical Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences , the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Foundation Historical Lexicon of Switzerland . These four founding institutions form the Biography Portal working group. The first chairperson was Christine Gruber (Austrian Academy of Sciences) from 2009 to 2013, and Marco Jorio (HLS) from 2013 to 2017 .

Other cooperation partners include the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts , the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies , the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore, and the Rhineland-Palatinate State Library Center .

In accordance with further cooperation agreements, the inclusion of additional national and regional biographical reference works for the biography portal is planned.
