Biotope mapping

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A habitat mapping is a collection of habitats in a particular area to them in terms of their importance for the ecosystem to evaluate. Geographic information systems (GIS) are primarily used for this purpose. Biotope mapping is usually carried out on behalf of authorities, but also by private individuals interested in nature conservation , for example in nature conservation associations or as part of research work.

execution

Either the entire selected area (e.g. the demarcation of a municipality) is recorded (area-wide biotope mapping) or only selected landscape components that are particularly relevant to nature conservation are mapped (selective biotope mapping, abbreviated SBK). In any case, the basis is the allocation of the landscape section found to one or more previously defined biotope types , which are usually defined and described in mapping instructions. Area-wide mappings usually only consist of such biotope type mapping and the recording of some additional structural parameters. In the case of selective biotope mapping, more extensive surveys are usually carried out, which can also include the recording of occurring animal and plant species, plant communities, etc. Mostly, cadastral data such as owner, use, natural spatial classification, etc. are also recorded.

In one or more inspections z. B. the following data are registered:

A complete faunistic and floristic survey of the study area exceeds the scope of a biotope mapping. For this purpose, targeted recordings over a longer period of time, usually at least over the growing season , would be necessary. For each group of organisms these would be different methods and different periods of time; for groups that cannot be determined in the field, catching, preparation and determination e.g. B. the invertebrates , which not only exceeds the human resources , but also the time frame. Depending on the purpose of the mapping, it may be sufficient to assess biotopes on the basis of easily identifiable key species (e.g. birds ).

The result of the biotope mapping is a map in which the mapped biotopes are delimited, and a more or less extensive index of factual data with tables, lists of species and the other recorded parameters. This should allow an assessment of the area from a nature conservation point of view, broken down into individual sub-areas. It is important e.g. B. the evaluation of whether the mapped area fulfills the requirements for a protected biotope according to the Nature Conservation Act or a habitat type worthy of protection according to the Habitats Directive . The basic survey for a biotope value method is a special case of area-wide biotope (type) mapping .

aims

The purpose of a biotope mapping is to make an inventory of the landscape from a nature conservation perspective. This is helpful for:

Selective biotope mapping of the federal states

In Germany, biotope mapping is carried out in all federal states by the state environment ministries or these subordinate authorities. The federal organization of nature conservation in Germany means that each federal state uses its own mapping key and the implementation and methodology differ slightly from one another, although basically all countries map more or less the same thing with similar objectives. The task of selective biotope mapping is, in addition to the basic survey for nature and landscape protection, also the fulfillment of legal or contractual obligations, e.g. B. Recording of the legally protected biotopes according to the Federal Nature Conservation Act (or the extensions in the respective state laws) or recording of the habitat types according to the Habitats Directive. Below is an overview of the biotope mapping of the individual federal states

  • Baden-Württemberg:
  • Bavaria:
  • Berlin:
  • Brandenburg:
  • Bremen:
  • Hamburg:
  • Hesse:
  • Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania:
  • Lower Saxony:
  • North Rhine-Westphalia:
  • Rhineland-Palatinate:
  • Saarland: Biotope mapping carried out (3 runs). No information on the internet.
  • Saxony: In the period from 1996 to 2002, the State Office for Environment and Geology carried out the second round of selective biotope mapping (SBK2) in open land. From 2006 to 2008, the results of the SBK2 in open areas were only updated in a third round in selected topographical map sheets (SBK3). From 2009, the selective biotope mapping in the open land area will no longer be carried out in the previous form. The selective biotope mapping in the forest area is carried out under the leadership of the Sachsenforst state enterprise (state institute for forests until 2000).
  • Schleswig-Holstein:
  • Thuringia:
