Birdland (Hamburg)
The Birdland is a Hamburg jazz club . The cellar club is located in the Eimsbüttel district on Gärtnerstraße. It holds 150 guests with around 110 seats.
The club was opened in 1985 by Dieter Reichert. He was supported by the Friends of the Jazz Federation Hamburg eV , which acted as the organizer of the music events and whose members had free entry to the events.
The program of Birdland included swing , mainstream , bebop , Latin and modern jazz . Only live music was played. Concerts took place several times a week. Once a week, Birdland hosted a jam session in which not only beginners and music students but also well-known jazz stars played when they were on tour. There was a vocal session once a month.
The musicians who performed at Birdland include Chet Baker , Johnny Griffin , Joe Henderson , Art Blakey , Ray Brown , Diana Krall , Tommy Flanagan , Brad Mehldau , Viktoria Tolstoy , Rebekka Bakken , as well as the brothers Branford and Wynton Marsalis . Recordings of performances for the labels ACT , Polonia and Nagel-Heyer Records took place in the Birdland and were published on sound carriers.
After Dieter Reichert retired for reasons of age, the Birdland closed on June 30, 2013. On October 1, 2014, it was reopened under the direction of Dieter Reichert's sons Wolff and Ralph Reichert. There are regular jam sessions, jazz concerts and singer / songwriter evenings are also held.
