The settlement has access to the New Zealand State Highway 75 , which leads around 1 km north of Christchurch into the mountainous regions of the Banks Peninsula and to Akaroa .

history

On May 16, 1882, the connecting line from Birding's Flat to the Southbridge Branch in Lincoln was opened. This line became known as the Little River Branch when it expanded to Little River on March 11, 1886. The railroad served the station in Birdling's Flat until it was closed on June 30, 1962. The former embankment has been well preserved and is now being revitalized as a public walking and cycling route as the Little River Rail Trail .

The University of Canterbury operational by 2016 in the settlement of four radar systems that have been used for different tasks. A 26.2 MHz radar was used to track meteorites . Another with 2.4 MHz for the wind measurements within the mesosphere between an altitude of 60 km and 100 km. A third system was used to measure the ionization of the atmosphere and the fourth radar system was to determine the wind conditions at a height of 2 km to 12 km at a frequency of 42.5 MHz. All systems were decommissioned in 2016.

Attractions

Birding's Flat beach is rich in precious stones and a wide variety of rocks of volcanic origin. Collectors and artisans who make jewelry from the stones get their money's worth on the long beach. However, the beach is not suitable for swimming or water sports and is even classified as extremely dangerous due to its special current and wave conditions.
