Birgit Sewekow

Birgit Sewekow (born Hauffe ; born January 2, 1946 in Darmstadt ; † June 17, 2016 in Leverkusen ) was a German painter , graphic artist and sculptor of classical modernism. The joy of color in her paintings, watercolors and drawings made her follow the tradition of impressionism and expressionism . Her plastic work is attributed to surrealism . The basic artistic training in painting schools and studios was followed in 2004 by training according to academic specifications by Professor Markus Lüpertz (Düsseldorf).

Life

Birgit Sewekow, inspired by her parents (natural scientists), was already engaged in painting during her school days , including the 20th century, as well as various artistic techniques. After graduating from high school, he studied in Hamburg : first Greek, philosophy and art history, parallel turning to painting - then studying physics with a degree. 1974 followed the doctoral thesis at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin and the doctorate in physics. Afterwards, he began working at Bayer AG , Leverkusen.

Birgit Sewekow was married to the chemist Ulrich Sewekow. You have a daughter. The painter lived and worked in her studio in Leverkusen .

As a painter, she has made numerous study trips. Images of landscapes, people and historical sites were created on these. Visits to study cultures took place in the following countries, among others: USA, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Turkey, Uzbekistan, India, Burma, Cambodia, Nepal, Bhutan and Japan. In Europe it was trips to the great centers of art.

From 1997 a multifaceted work was created. It includes paintings, etchings , lithographs , linocuts , drawings and sculptures . Training at Ellen Loh-Bachmann's “School for Painting” was followed by further training in various techniques in the studios of graphic designer and project artist Georg Gartz (Cologne), animal and landscape painter Jörg Mangold (Bad Griesbach) and others. Since 2004 she has regularly participated in Markus Lüpertz's summer academies (Bad Reichenhall / Düsseldorf / Bad Honnef).

The painter's themes are landscapes, buildings, portraits, nudes, animals, still lifes and allegorical representations. Her techniques are paintings in oil and acrylic, watercolors, pen drawings, Indian ink, red chalk, charcoal, pastel, linocut and mixed media. In dealing with world literature, historical figures and special places, illustrations for printed works were also created. These include cycles with the following themes: Don Quixote, Goethe's Faust, The Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh. The religious section includes illustrations on Christ, Martin Luther, Dante - the Divine Comedy and "Holy Places".

Collections / museums

The Museum of European Art (NRW) in Nörvenich near Cologne is dedicating a permanent exhibition to the artist. The art museum Schloss Nörvenich (Düren district) shows an annual themed exhibition with current works. The European Culture Foundation (Germany) has pictures of the artist in its collection, including paintings from the Alexander the Great cycle .
