The first known documentary mention of Birkach comes from a donation of property by the noble von Rauheneck on June 12, 1231 to the Würzburg bishop Hermann I von Lobdeburg .
After several changes of ownership, Birkach went to knight Georg Fuchs von Bimbach in 1412/13. Through this Birkach became Protestant and a member of the Protestant parish Burgpreppach. After the Fuchs von Bimbach had to sell the place in 1640 because of debts after the Thirty Years War , Birkach left the parish in 1671. Then Birkach went to the Catholic branch in Gemeinfeld. The early Gothic simultaneous church of St. Philip and Jacob from the 13th century was in the 17th / 18th. Rebuilt in the 19th century.
On July 1, 1973, Birkach became a district of Burgpreppach as part of the municipal reform.
