Beruniy ( Karakalpakisch : Biruniy ) is the capital of the district of the same name in the autonomous republic of Karakalpakistan in Central Asian Uzbekistan . The city of Beruniy itself, located at 87 m above sea level, is not part of the republic and, according to a current estimate, has around 66,090 inhabitants. The last census in 1989 showed 37,800 inhabitants.

Beruniy is located on the right bank of the Amu Darya , about 20 km northeast of Urganch . Until 1958 the city was called Шabбаз Shabbaz , now it is named after the Persian scholar al-Biruni , who was born in the area of ​​today's Beruniy in 973 in the then city of Kath . Beruniy received city status in 1962.
