The Bishop (2033 m) is a summit in the Bavarian Prealps .
It is located in the westernmost part of the Bavarian Prealps in the Ester Mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
The usual ascent leads from Oberau over the Oberauer Steig to the saddle between Bischof and Hohem Fricken and further over the western ridge on good tracks through the pines to the summit (a total of approx. 3.5 hours in the ascent).
Origin of name
The origin of the name is not clear. One theory is that the mountain was named because of its shape, similar to a bishop's hood. According to another theory, the name is derived from a family with the surname Bishop , who may have had grazing, timber or mining rights there in earlier times.
