Bisera Turković

Bisera Turković (born December 8, 1954 in Sisak , Yugoslavia ) is a Bosnian diplomat and politician of the Stranka demokratske akcije party (German: Party of Democratic Action , SDA for short). She has been the Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina since December 2019 .

Life and political career

Bisera Turković was born in Sisak . She has a degree in Law of the University of Sarajevo and in criminal justice administration of Philip Institute of Technology in Melbourne , Australia . She also completed postgraduate studies in criminology from the University of LaTrobe in Melbourne and received her PhD in international relations . After graduating, she worked at Hayat TV before becoming an ambassador.

Turković was the first ambassador in the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her first assignments as ambassador were in Croatia from 1993 to 1994 and in Hungary from 1994 to 1996. From 2000 to 2001, Turković was Minister for European Integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina and from 2001 to 2004 she was Executive Director of the Center for Security Studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She was also a lecturer in criminal justice at the Law Faculty of Sarajevo University. In addition, she was ambassador to the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna from 1996 to 2000 and to the Permanent Mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations in Vienna from 2004 to 2005 as well as Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency , the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization .

From 2005 to 2009 she was ambassador to the United States , Mexico and Brazil as well as permanent representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), then from 2009 to 2018 in Belgium and Luxembourg . Since September 2018 she has been ambassador to Qatar and was this until her appointment as foreign minister of her country.

On December 23, 2019, she was appointed by Zoran Tegeltija as the first foreign minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina and as the successor to Igor Crnadak . She is also Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Her first meeting as foreign minister took place a few days later on December 28 with her Croatian counterpart Gordan Grlić Radman .
