biography

Ljubijankić, who after studying medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Belgrade worked as an maxillofacial surgeon, began his political career when he was elected Member of Parliament on November 18, 1990 in the first democratic elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina and later became one of the leaders of the Democratic Action Party (Stranka demokratske akcije) by Alija Izetbegović .

In 1991 he was appointed President of the Bihać District (Okrug) and held this office until October 1993. When the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina began in the spring of 1992, Bihać was besieged by Serbian troops from the occupied territories in Croatia and within Bosnia. Cut off from the world, the place therefore had to endure great suffering. Instead of continuing to work exclusively as a politician, he voluntarily decided to continue his work in the city's hospital on the side. His experience in facial surgery was particularly valuable at this time, as it enabled many injuries caused by shrapnel to be treated properly.

On October 29, 1993, Prime Minister Haris Silajdžić appointed him Foreign Minister to the government. In this function he immediately began his efforts to find a diplomatic peace solution for Bosnia and Herzegovina. In one of his last official business he was a representative on the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War on May 8, 1995 in London .

On May 28, 1995 Ljubijankič fell as a passenger of a helicopter Mi-17 over Cetingrad the shooting by a 2K12 - air missile victim. He left behind his wife and two children. Successor as Foreign Minister was Muhamed Sacirbey .

In honor of Ljubijankić, the singer Yusuf Islam, better known as Cat Stevens , gave a benefit concert in Sarajevo in 1997 and recorded a benefit album named after a song written by Ljubijankić, I Have No Cannons That Roar .
