history

Pope Pius XI founded the Apostolic Vicariate Funing with the Breve Ad maiorem on December 27, 1923 from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Foochow. With the Apostolic Constitution Quotidie Nos it was raised to the diocese on April 11, 1946.

The State Council of the People's Republic of China has united the six dioceses of Fujian Province into three dioceses: the Diocese of Funing is now known as the Diocese of Mindong .

On August 25, 2005, Bishop James Xie Shiguang, ordained in 1984, died. At his death the diocese had 75,000 believers, around 30 priests and 50 members from two religious communities . Vincent Zhan Silu succeeded him as bishop.
