Björn Sieber (born March 5, 1989 in Egg in the Bregenzerwald ; † October 26, 2012 in Schwarzenberg ) was an Austrian ski racer . He was particularly successful in the super combination . The graduate of the Stams Ski School was skiing for the ski club in his home town of Schwarzenberg in Vorarlberg .

biography

Sieber contested his first FIS races in December 2004, his first podium place followed in January 2006 in a slalom and his first victory in March 2009 in a giant slalom. In the European Cup he started for the first time on January 11th, 2008 at the Super-G in Hinterstoder and immediately scored his first points with 23rd place. The next month he won the bronze medal in the Super-G at the Junior World Championship in Formigal, Spain .

In October 2008 Sieber injured his shoulder in the giant slalom qualification runs for the World Cup races in Sölden and had to pause for eight weeks. In January 2009 he returned to racing, in February he finished sixth in the giant slalom in Soldeu for the first time in the top ten in a European Cup race and in March he won the silver medal in giant slalom at the 2009 Junior World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .

At the end of November 2009, Sieber was third in Levi's giant slalom on the podium for the first time in the European Cup and two weeks later he celebrated his first victory in the giant slalom in St. Vigil . At the end of the 2009/10 season he reached third place in the giant slalom classification. Due to his success in the European Cup, he was allowed to compete in the World Cup giant slalom in Val-d'Isère on December 13, 2009 , but was eliminated in the first round. He achieved his first World Cup points on January 29, 2010 with rank 27 in the first giant slalom in Kranjska Gora . The next day he achieved 23rd place in the second giant slalom.

For the first time, Sieber was among the top 20 of a World Cup race on January 14th, 2011 with 15th place in the super combination of Wengen . At the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen he started in the super combination (13th place) and in the giant slalom (22nd place), for which he was nominated after the injury by Hannes Reichelt . He achieved his best World Cup result on February 26, 2011 with 7th place in the super combined by Bansko . At the end of the 2010/2011 season he was Austrian super-G champion. After two years in the A-squad, Sieber was accepted into the national team of the ÖSV after the winter, but was transferred straight back to the B-squad in 2012. His best World Cup result of the 2011/2012 season was eleventh place in the super combination of Wengen.

On October 26, 2012 Sieber died in a car accident in his hometown of Schwarzenberg. His brother, who drove the car, was seriously injured.
