Floral diagram
In botany, a flower diagram is a schematic outline of a flower . The diagram usually shows the morphology of a flower more clearly than a flower formula .
The symbols for the flower parts are drawn in concentric circles or a spiral. If the flowers are on a main axis, the supporting sheet and the axis are also entered in the diagram.
There are two types of flowering diagram:
- Empirical flower diagrams show the actual conditions.
- Theoretical flower diagrams are provided with specific interpretations in addition to the actual circumstances, for example the positions of unusual stamens are drawn in.
use
Flower diagrams are often used in botanical textbooks and in the identification literature. Sometimes the flowers of different types of plants have no or only minimal distinguishing features on the outside, while their internal structure enables reliable identification. For this reason, a flower diagram is often more meaningful than a photo of the outer flower or a habitus drawing .
