Black Mountain (dt. Black Mountain ) is a 812  m high hill in Australia . It is located on the territory of the capital Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory and, like all the major hills in the city, is part of the Canberra Natural Park . It is overgrown with native shrubbery and is a refuge for endangered animal species.

description

The hill rises west of the main campus of the Australian National University . Together with the Bruce Ridge, it forms a natural boundary west and northwest of the city of Canberra. Black Mountain rises 256 meters above the water level of Lake Burley Griffin , the large lake in the city center. In the immediate vicinity of the summit is the Black Mountain Tower , a 195 meter high telecommunications tower and the city's landmark. At the eastern foot of the hill, near the university campus, are the facilities of the Australian National Botanic Gardens and the CSIRO .

The original name of the hill was Black Hill , based on the nearby Red Hill . It is not known who gave him this name. The early European settlers referred to the hill formation as the Canberry Ranges . The first documented ascent took place in 1820.

Most of the hill is made of white quartz sandstone that was deposited about 420 million years ago in the early Silurian Age. On the south-east and north-west slopes the rock consists of slate , on the south side of the Ordovician's greywacke . The offshore Black Mountain Peninsula in Lake Burley Griffin consists of mudstone .
