The metro station Blanche is a station on the Line 2 of the Paris Métro .

location

The station is located on the slope of Montmartre on the border of the Quartier Saint-Georges in the 9th arrondissement with the Quartier des Grandes-Carrières in the 18th arrondissement of Paris . It lies lengthways under the Boulevard de Clichy east of the Place Blanche.

Surname

The eponymous Place Blanche (White Square) got its name because of the wagons and carts that ran there in the 17th century. They transported gypsum from the quarries at Montmartre across the square and through the rue Blanche to the south to the city of Paris. Therefore, the street and the facades of the houses were covered with white plaster dust.

history

The station was put into operation on October 21, 1902 after the section of line 2 north from Étoile (since 1970: Charles de Gaulle - Étoile ) to Anvers had been opened two weeks earlier . Trains passed through it without stopping between October 7 and October 21, 1902. The addition "North" was dropped on October 14, 1907, and the line has only been numbered 2 since then.

description

The station, located under an elliptical vault, is located at a shallow depth below street level. It is 75 m long and has two side platforms on two main tracks. The ceiling and walls are tiled in white, the side walls follow the curvature of the ellipse.

The only access is on the east side of Place Blanche in the median of Boulevard de Clichy. It has largely been preserved in its original form and is a listed building. Hector Guimard designed it at the time in the style of Art Nouveau .

vehicles

Initially, trains made up of two-axle vehicles ran on Line 2 North. From 1914 to 1981 line 2 was used by Sprague-Thomson trains. Since it was not to be converted to vehicles with rubber tires in the medium term , the MF 67 series was launched in 1979 , completely replacing its predecessor within two years. Series MF 01 series vehicles have been used in the station of Line 2 since 2008 , now exclusively.

Surroundings

The world-famous Moulin Rouge variety theater is in the immediate vicinity . The Paris North Cemetery - popularly known as Cimetière de Montmartre - with many graves of well-known personalities is within walking distance.
