The metro station Place de Clichy is an underground interchange station of the Paris Métro . It is served by lines 2 and 13 .

location

The station is located at the border point of the 8th , 9th , 17th and 18th arrondissements of Paris . The station of line 2 is located lengthways under the Boulevard de Clichy between the Place de Clichy and Rue Coulaincourt, the line 13 is located lengthways under the Avenue de Clichy north of the Place de Clichy.

Surname

The station is named after the Place de Clichy, where the road to the suburb of Clichy began. The Barrière de Clichy gate was located in the Mur des Fermiers généraux city wall . The name Clichy is believed to be derived from a former landowner named Cleppuis.

history

The first station went into operation on October 26, 1902, just under three weeks after the Compagnie du chemin de fer métropolitain de Paris (CMP) extended its line 2 north from Étoile (since 1970: Charles de Gaulle - Étoile ) to Anvers had opened. The addition "North" was dropped on October 14, 1907, and the line has only been numbered 2 since then.

The station on line 13 was built by the competing company Société du chemin de fer électrique souterrain Nord-Sud de Paris (Nord-Sud) and opened on February 26, 1911. As line B, the first 2900 m long section from Saint-Lazare to Porte de Saint-Ouen went into operation.

description

The station of line 2, which is located under an elliptical vault, is located at a shallow depth below street level. It is 75 m long and has side platforms on two parallel tracks. The ceiling and walls are tiled in white, the side walls follow the curvature of the ellipse.

In contrast to the station on line 2 (CMP), that of line 13 (north-south) was designed to be more complex. Because of the overhead line installed near the north-south, it is slightly higher, the side walls run in a straight line vertically in the lower area. In the 1960s it was clad in sheet metal, but has since been restored in the original north-south style with ceramic tiles, largely true to the original.

An entrance to the Place de Clichy designed by Hector Guimard in the Art Nouveau style has largely been preserved in the original. It has been a listed building since 1978. Another Guimard entrance is located in the median of Boulevard de Clichy at the northern end of the station on Line 2. The entrance to the Nord-Sud station on Place de Clichy, designed by Adolphe Dervaux , has also been preserved. The NORD-SUD logo was replaced by METROPOLITAIN in the early 1930s and an escalator was installed later.

To the west of its station, line 2 is crossed almost at right angles by line 13. There is no track connection between the two lines.

vehicles

MF 77 series train leaving

Initially, trains made up of two-axle vehicles ran on Line 2 North. From 1914 to 1981 line 2 was used by Sprague-Thomson trains. Since it was not to be converted to vehicles with rubber tires in the medium term , the MF 67 series was launched in 1979 , completely replacing its predecessor within two years. Series MF 01 series vehicles have been used in the station of Line 2 since 2008 , now exclusively.

Sprague-Thomson vehicles with modifications according to the specifications of the operating company Nord-Sud initially ran on line 13 . From February 1952 they were replaced by the MA series  , from 1975 onwards by the MF 67 series. In 1978, the line was the first to receive the new MF 77 series trains , which has been the only vehicle type there since then.

Others

It was temporarily considered to run line 14 via the Saint-Lazare station to the Place de Clichy station. This project was abandoned in favor of a changed plan.

The corridors of the transfer station are filled with classical music, which is supposed to keep thieves, drug addicts and graffiti sprayers at bay “according to the German model”.

Surroundings

Near the northern exit is the Cimetière de Montmartre cemetery , where Hector Berlioz , Heinrich Heine and François Truffaut , among others , were buried.

Remarks

  1. After the takeover by CMP, the line designation was changed to "13"
  2. The Nord-Sud merged with the CMP in 1930
