Blerim Reka (born May 22, 1960 in Skopje , Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia ) is an Albanian lawyer , academic and politician from North Macedonia . Since February 2020 he has been Minister for European Integration of the Republic of Kosovo .

Academic and professional career

1982 closed Blerim Reka at the University of Prishtina his law school with a diploma, in 1994 he obtained at derselbigen the Master in Law . In 2002 he obtained his doctorate in international law in Pristina and Graz with a doctoral thesis on the legal system in Kosovo under UNMIK .

From 2003 to 2006 Blerim Reka was Dean of the Department of Public Administration at the South East European University (SEEU) in Tetovo , from 2005 also Vice Rector for Research.

In June 2006 Reka moved to the permanent representation of the Republic of Macedonia to the European Union in Brussels and served as head of mission until July 2010.

Since September 2010 he has been working again at the SEEU in Tetovo as Vice Rector for Research.

Political career

Presidential election in North Macedonia

In the presidential election in North Macedonia in 2019 , Blerim Reka ran as one of three candidates, but with 11% of the votes he missed the second ballot, in which the socialist Stevo Pendarovski then opposed Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova ( VMRO-DPMNE ) could enforce. Reka was officially supported by two smaller ethnic Albanian parties in North Macedonia.

Minister in Kosovo

After the parliamentary elections in Kosovo in 2019 and the associated coalition negotiations to form a new government, Blerim Reka, proposed by the election winner Lëvizja Vetëvendosje! under Albin Kurti , initially acted as the future Foreign Minister of the Republic of Kosovo. After a coalition agreement was reached with the LDK in February 2020, Reka was finally given the responsibility for European integration in the Kurti cabinet.

Private

Blerim Reka is the son of the teacher Nazmije Kastrati-Reka from Karaçeva near Gjilan and the academic Hamza Reka (1925-2013) from Tetovo . From 1960 he taught the Albanian language for 30 years until retirement at the Pedagogical Academy in Skopje and in 1972 took part in the last orthography congress of the Albanian language in Tirana . Blerim's sister is Drita Reka-Gërmizaj (1952-2001), news anchor for TV Prishtina from its inception in 1974 until it was closed by the Serbian regime in 1990.

Blerim Reka is married to Ymrane Reka. They have three daughters together - one of whom died in childhood - as well as a son who was married for a while to the Albanian-speaking singer Altuna Sejdiu .
