Blood on the Saddle occasionally even Blood On The Saddle or Blood In The Saddle , is a in 1981 Los Angeles , founded by Greg Davis (vocals, guitar), Ron Botelho and Hermann Senac Cowpunk - band .

The band released three albums before the original line-up split in 1987. In 1990 Blood On The Saddle was re-established with a new line-up; since then the band has released four more albums and one EP until 2003. The only permanent member of the band since the formation is Greg Davis (* 1965).

Band history

Greg Davis founded the band at the end of 1981 together with Ron Botelho and Hermann Senac. Former The Bangles bassist Annette Zilinskas joined the band prior to the recording of the debut album of the same name, Blood on the Saddle , which was released in 1984 by New Alliance Records. The US-American music journal Trouser Press described the album as "ragged harmonies , yodelling vocals and beating standing bass " with the effect of a " rodeo in which even the horses are at speed".

A second album, Poison Love , was released in early 1986 on the Chameleon music label . Allmusic stated that the album had “enormous growth” in its review, gave it the “AMG Album Pick” and certified the band that it “would sound more like one of the better guitar pop bands in the mid-1960s […] than like a bunch of punks who stumbled into a country roadhouse ”(compared to the first album). Trouser Press wrote of the album that it "refined the stylistic balance of the group, emphasized the energetic country rock side and reduced the more wanton rock impulses of the first album."

Lack of advertising by Chameleon caused the band to switch to SST Records the following year , where they released their third album Fresh Blood ; but since it was not selling well, the band split in 1987.

Davis formed a new band, The Drivers, Senac joined the Loafin 'Hyenas and later Crowbar Salvation and Guilty Hearts, and Botelho went on to work with the late Bobbi Bratt. Davis continued to perform as Blood on the Saddle until late 1988, supported by musicians such as former DC3 bassist Caesar Viscarra and drummer Dave Shollenbarger (Steve Jones); In 1989 he went on a European tour with the Vandals .

In 1990, Blood on the Saddle was re-founded by Greg Davis, Chris Engel (bass) and Danny Rickard (drums). When Engel died unexpectedly of an overdose in 1991, he was replaced by John Stephenson before Caesar Viscarra returned to the band in 1992.

In 1993, Billy Koepke and Eric Davis joined the band and the first release in six years came: the album More Blood released by Schemer Records . John Stephenson also returned and the band released the EP 4 Song 7 " in 1994 , followed by the album Some Songs , both on the music label Kill Rock Stars .

The last album released so far is called Flesh and Blood and dates back to 2003. Today Davis lives in Encinitas and has been performing since 2010 on the side of bassist Robby Tavares and with the current line-up since 2019.
