Boal Branco is a white wine variety . It is an autochthonous variety in Portugal and its cultivation is recommended on Madeira Island . It is also approved in the regions of Beira Litoral, Ribatejo , Oeste and the Azores . The main growing areas are in Madeira, in the south of Portugal and on the islands of Pico , Ilha do Faial , São Jorge and Graciosa . In the 1990s, a planted vineyard area of 4,014 hectares was raised.

The medium-early to late-ripening variety is used in particular in blends with the Sercial , Malvasia Bianca and Verdelho varieties in the various varieties of Madeira wine . Boal Branco produces a semi-sweet wine and is also popular as a table grape . The wines are astonishingly dark due to the oxidative development. Bual is very aromatic. The best Bual wines have a good balance between sweetness and acidity . The aromas in wine become more diverse with age : lime, caramel, coffee, orange peel, apricot, dried fruits ...

The Boal Branco grape variety belongs to the large Boal family, which also includes Boal Barreiro, Boal Cachudo, Boal Espinho, Boal Ratinho, Boal Roxo and Boal Vencedor.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is colored with white woolly hair and light carmine red. The yellowish young leaves are lightly woolly hairy and spotted bronze (anthocyanin spots).
  • The large leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stalk bay is closed like a lyre. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is hardly blistered.
  • The mostly cylindrical to cone-shaped grapes are shouldered, medium-sized and moderately dense. The slightly oval berries are medium-sized and golden yellow in color.

The Boal Branco grape variety ripens approx. 30 days after the Gutedel grape variety and thus belongs to the grape varieties of the middle third ripening period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). This makes it one of the late-ripening varieties. It is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
