Bob Carter (musician)

Bob Carter (actually Robert Ashley Kahakalau , born February 11, 1922 in New Haven , Connecticut , † August 1, 1993 in Hawaii ) was an American jazz bassist and arranger of swing and modern jazz .

Live and act

Bob Carter took bass and guitar lessons from his father. From 1937 to 1940 he played in local orchestras, went on tour from 1940 to 1942 and had his own trio in Boston in 1944 . After his military service in 1944/45 he played in the jazz clubs on 52nd Street in New York with various formations, such as Tony Scott , Dizzy Gillespie , Charlie Parker , Stuff Smith or Charlie Shavers .

In 1946 he was involved in bebop recordings by Allen Eager and Max Roach for Savoy . In 1947/48 he toured with Charlie Ventura , in 1949/50 with Benny Goodman and again in 1953/54 with Ventura's orchestra. From 1955 he studied composition and arrangement and also played with Red Norvo , for whom he also wrote arrangements, with Bob Harrington and Shelly Manne . From 1957 to 1958 he stayed in Hawaii . After his return to New York he played from 1959 with Bobby Hackett . In the early 1960s he worked in Kurt Edelhagen's orchestra in Germany .
