Bob Szajner

Robert Martin "Bob" Szajner (born September 12, 1938 ; † November 9, 2019 ) was an American jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Szajner, who received first piano lessons from his mother, attended Chadsey High School and studied at the University of Michigan . He worked as a jazz pianist in Detroit, where he accompanied Donald Byrd , Charles McPherson , Lonnie Hillyer , Yusef Lateef , Pepper Adams and Frank Isola , only to not appear as a musician for several years. In October 1978 he recorded material for several albums with his own compositions in a trio session with Ray McKinney (bass) and Roy Brooks (drums), which were released under the titles Jazz Opus 20/40 , Sound Ideas and Afterthoughts on the Seeds & Stems label published; further tracks followed on the RMS label as The Outtakes of TRIAD and The Lost Outtakes of TRIAD . In 1980 he recorded the album Loose Ends with Ed Pickens and Frank Isola, music for the Detroit Black Journal soundtrack . He also performed with Pickens and Isola at the Montreux Detroit Jazz Festival in Hart Plaza, Detroit. In his later years, Szajner recorded as a soloist in multi-track technology as The Bob Szajner Digital Ensemble and released nine other albums, the most recent being Sounds of the South and West , which was created in 2015. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 31 recording sessions between 1978 and 2015, according to Tom Lord .

According to Alex Henderson ( Allmusic ), Szajner is "a personable hardbop / postbop player with an approach that is swinging yet introspective and lyrical."
