De Vries started in Salt Lake City in December 2009 for the first time in the Speed Skating World Cup and took fourth place in the team pursuit and first place in the B group over 5000 m. In the 2010/11 season he reached third place in the team pursuit in Berlin and third place in Salt Lake City over 10,000 m and in Heerenveen over 5000 m, his first podium places in the World Cup. At the individual distance world championships in 2011 in Inzell , he won the bronze medal in the team pursuit and the silver medal over 10,000 m. In addition, he was the Dutch champion over 5,000 m in the season and came third in the overall World Cup over 5,000/10000 m at the end of the season. In the following year he ran at the individual distance world championships in Heerenveen in sixth place over 10,000 m and at the World Cup in Heerenveen in third place over 10,000 m. In the 2013/14 season he achieved third place in the mass start in Inzell and his first World Cup victory in the mass start in Heerenveen, thus winning the mass start World Cup at the end of the season. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he came in 15th place over 5000 m.
