Bockelsberg is a district of Lüneburg in Lower Saxony . The district is located south of the center and the Rotes Feld district .

history

The district takes its name from the humpback mountains that flowed into Lüneburg Switzerland. Due to this geological appearance, of which nothing can be seen after various straightening, little agriculture was carried out here.

At the end of the 19th century, the Lüneburg Beautification Association began reforesting and setting up a fish pond for recreational purposes.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the original plan was to continue the villa development that had begun in the Rote Feld up to the Bockelsberg. Due to structural changes, however, the construction of the Scharnhorst barracks in the homeland security style began in 1935 , which was moved into a year later by parts of the 22nd Infantry Division (Wehrmacht) . Most of the residential development, especially south of the barracks, dates from the post-war period.

Economy and Infrastructure

The district is mainly characterized by the current site of the University of Lüneburg , the former Scharnhorst barracks. In addition, there are numerous multi-family houses in the southern part of the city, some of which are designated as student dormitories , while development with single-family houses predominates in the east. But the local recreation factor is still very important. The district is bounded in the east by the Ilmenau meadows and in the south and west by Lüneburg Switzerland.
