The Mittelfeld is the westernmost district of Lüneburg and borders in the north on the Weststadt , in the southeast on the Rote Feld and in the southwest on the district Oedeme .

history

In the center of Mittelfeld lies the Meinekenhop, which was sold to the city council in the 17th century as a piece of forest for deforestation. The connecting routes to Oedeme and Gut Schnellenberg led across this area .

At the end of the 19th century, the central cemetery was laid south of the Oedemer Weg after the older cemeteries had become too small. The first burial took place in 1876. The cemetery has many interesting tombs of Lüneburg personalities.

In the far east, clad to the city, the municipal hospital was built in 1900 as an initially two- wing building, which has been continuously expanded since then.

In 1922, the then Mayor of Lüneburg, Ernst Braune, founded the Lüneburger Volkshaus GmbH, the predecessor of the Lüneburger Wohnungsbau GmbH (LüWoBau). This began with the extensive development of the central area, known today as the Ernst-Braune-Siedlung, in order to counter the ongoing housing shortage. The Meinekenhop was built in the mid-1930s as a closed ensemble based on garden city models.

Economy and Infrastructure

The district is mainly characterized by single and multi-family houses. To the east is the Lüneburg Municipal Hospital and the Central Cemetery. The two residential areas Schaperdrift and Teufelsküche are mainly connected to the transport network via the middle field, but belong to the district of Oedeme.
