Bodo Menze
Bodo Menze (born April 20, 1953 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a German football official. From 1991 to the end of 2013 he was the youth coordinator of FC Schalke 04 .
Bodo Menze was born in a house near the Glückauf-Kampfbahn in Gelsenkirchen . In 1964 he joined FC Schalke 04 and played through several youth teams as an active player. From 1976 to 1981 he studied French and sports at the Ruhr University in Bochum , after which he completed an apprenticeship as a football teacher at the Sports University in Cologne . In 1985, the Lower Rhine Football Association , based in Duisburg , hired him as a coach.
In 1991, then President Günter Eichberg brought him back to FC Schalke 04 as a youth manager. At that time, most clubs, including Schalke, were largely inactive. Menze introduced professional structures in Gelsenkirchen. With Manfred Dubski , Norbert Elgert , Lothar Matuschak and other trainers, Menze installed full-time workers who made a major contribution to the success of Schalke's youth work in the years to come. In 1993 he initiated a cooperation with the comprehensive school in Berger Feld in order to coordinate the school and football training of the young talents more closely. A year later, a talent development project was set up in Gelsenkirchen in cooperation with the State Sports Association and the NRW Ministry of the Interior. In 2007, the Berger Feld comprehensive school was the fourth German school to be recognized by the DFB as an elite school for football .
Under the aegis of Bodo Menze, many Schalke youth players established themselves in the German professional leagues - 50 of them in the years between 2003 and 2013 alone. Homemade such as Manuel Neuer , Ralf Fährmann , Benedikt Höwedes , Joel Matip , Mesut Özil , Julian Draxler , Max Meyer , Sead Kolašinac or Kaan Ayhan made the leap into the Schalke Bundesliga team. In 2006 and 2012 Schalke's U-19s became German champions , and in 2002 the U-17s won the title. There were also several cup successes and victories at international tournaments.
In addition to his work at Schalke 04, Menze worked for many years as vice-chairman of the working group promoting young talent in the European Club Association . On January 1, 2014, Menze resigned as administrative head of the Schalke Young Talent Center (since 2012 "Knappenschmiede"). Since then he has been responsible for the area “International Relations and Associations” in his association.
