Publication history

As the German answer to the successful novel Die Orks by Stan Nicholls , Heyne Verlag published Die Zwerge in November 2003 . The first volume was published in both German and English. After the Heyne Fantasy series was taken over by Piper-Verlag , which now publishes all five volumes, the sequels The War of the Dwarfs and The Revenge of the Dwarfs appeared in October 2004 and 2005 . As announced in the foreword of the third part, Heitz "gave the Geborgenen Land time for itself [...] without anyone watching." And only continued the series in February 2008 with the publication of Das Schicksal der Zwerge . According to the epilogue, a fifth volume was not planned, but Markus Heitz announced in an interview that a fifth volume should appear. Heitz announced a series of novels about the Albae, bloodthirsty, elf-like antagonists from the dwarf books. The first part of the series called The Legends of the Albae was published by Piper at the end of April 2009 under the title Gerechter Zorn . In 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 the remaining four books of the Albae series followed, which, according to Heitz, is now completed.

In February 2015, the series about the dwarfs continued with the fifth volume The Triumph of the Dwarfs . According to Heitz, another band is not excluded.

The international distribution of the series began in early 2005. After being published in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the novels have since been available in the Czech Republic. In October 2005 the rights were sold to Italy. The Netherlands, Poland and Spain followed. In May 2006 Piper signed the contracts with the British publisher Orbit , the publication date for the United Kingdom and the USA was set for July / August 2009. There will also be The Dwarfs in Japanese . Problems with the translation of the word dwarf - as already before the publication in the Czech Republic, delayed the publication until the end of 2008. The books have now also appeared in France, and a contract has been signed for a Chinese edition. The Greek, Hungarian and Russian book markets have also expressed their interest in the series.

By the end of 2011, the dwarf series had sold over 1.5 million copies.

In addition to the four main novels, the role-playing game publisher Pegasus Press published the three game books The Third Expedition , The Stars of the Depths and Errand , interactive books in which the reader can direct the plot through their own decisions.

Success and Awards

The fate of the dwarves rose to third place on the Spiegel bestseller list in the field of fiction (hardcover) in early March 2008, behind Ken Follett's The Gates of the World and Charlotte Roches Wetlands .

The War of the Dwarfs in October 2005, The Revenge of the Dwarfs in October 2006 and The Fate of the Dwarfs in October 2009 won the German Fantastic Readers Award , which is awarded annually by the website phantastik-news.de, as “Best National Novel " excellent. Die Zwerge and Markus Heitz himself were also nominated for prizes.

The Dwarfs series was not only Heitz's breakthrough as a fantasy author, its huge commercial success also enabled the writer to concentrate full-time on writing.

Implementations

Die Zwerge was published as an audio book version in Audiobook Hamburg in September 2006 , The War of the Dwarfs in March 2007, The Revenge of the Dwarfs in August 2007 and The Fate of the Dwarfs at the same time as the novel was published in February 2008. These abbreviated audio versions are read by Johannes Steck .

Further dates for Zwerge Live will follow in 2015 and 2016 as well.

At the end of December 2006, the production company Hofmann & Voges Entertainment GmbH secured the film rights to the first volume of the tetralogy. If the film was successful, Hofmann & Voges also planned to film the sequels. At first they wanted to produce a feature film, but then decided on a two-part TV series. Mathias Dinter could be won as scriptwriter for the film . Filming was originally scheduled to start in 2010. In October 2008 Hofmann & Voges put a blog online, which was supposed to provide information about the processes in production. The latter, however, was taken offline again in autumn 2010. On April 6, 2011, Markus Heitz announced on his website that there would be no movie adaptation of the novel.

In a press release on September 8, 2011 it was announced that the novel series will be implemented as an international series. EOS Entertainment and H & V Entertainment are to serve as producers.

In 2012, Pegasus Spiele published the board game Die Zwerge by Michael Palm and Lukas Zach , which is based on the fantasy series by Markus Heitz. The cooperative game for 2–5 players aged 12 and over is designed for 60–120 minutes. Two months after the game was released, in December 2012 there was also the “The Dwarf Albae Expansion”, which added another to the three levels of difficulty.

In December 2013 the Splitter Verlag published the first part of a graphic novel for the novel "Die Zwerge". The story of the first novel is to appear in a total of four comic volumes.

Questor GmbH Berlin developed an interactive implementation of the adventure game books for smartphones and tablets in partnership with the publisher Pegasus Spiele. In October 2014 Die Zwerge “The Third Expedition” was published, in February 2015 the free story collection Die Zwerge “Prolog” was published and since May 2015 the implementation of the adventure game book “The Stars of the Depths” has been available for download in the iTunes Store and Google Play.

On July 7, 2015, the gaming magazine "Hooked" leaked an implementation of the first book as a video game implementation by King Art . The leak has now been confirmed.

Volume 1: The Dwarfs

The salvaged land is threatened by the orcs , trolls and ogres who attempt to penetrate the land surrounded by mountains via the five mountain passes. The five dwarf kingdoms, whose inhabitants are tasked with the defense of these passes, are about to fall, and when the stone gateway, the north pass in the dwarf kingdom of the fifth and with it the entire tribe falls, the so-called dead land penetrates further and further. Anyone who dies on this ground becomes an undead and stands against his brothers in arms.

Meanwhile, the seven human kingdoms and the Elven kingdom of Âlandur are under attack by the Albae, the dark, cruel relatives of the Elves, who founded an empire called Dsôn Balsur in the north of the country. Only the Magi and Magae ( lat . Sorcerers) can prevent the advance of the orcs and albae with the help of magical barriers.

Tungdil Bolofar is a dwarf who knows nothing about his tribe or origins. He grew up as a foundling in the tunnels of the human Magus Lot-Ionan, from whom he a. a. learned to read. When his foster father sends him on an errand to one of his former famuli (magic students) to bring him a sack of utensils, Tungdil's adventure begins. Because when he does not find the student in his dwelling, the Schwarzjoch, in the center of the protected land, he is determined to still fulfill his task and goes on a search.

Meanwhile, the five Magi and Magae are called by their colleague Nudin to the capital of his magical kingdom Lios Nudin, Porista, to take part in a refreshment of the magical barriers. This gathering ends fatally for the spellcaster, because Nudin turns out to be the traitor Nôd'onn and cruelly kills his friends. When the rulers of the human realms learn of it, they raise an army around the magician's capital, where it is located Center of the magic fields is located, which feeds the six wizarding realms, storm.

Meanwhile, Tungdil meets the twin brothers Boïndil and Boëndal from the tribe of the Second and learns of the terrible events and the death of his foster father Lot-Ionan. In the utensils that the wizard gave him for his famulus, Tungdil discovers a book that contains the blacksmith's instructions for the fire blade, a powerful weapon that alone is capable of killing Nôd'onn. The twins lead him to Ogertod, their realm in the south.

On the way, the three meet Andôkai, the last Maga, and her guardian Djerůn, an eerie creature in steel armor. In the Realm of the Second, Tungdil meets the dying great dwarf king Gundrabur Weisshaupt. A tribal gathering is in progress to appoint a successor.

Since Gundrabur came from the second and the third are excluded from the meetings as dwarf haters, a great king must now compete from the ranks of the fourth. Gandogar Silberbart, King of the Fourth, appears to be the only candidate for the office of Great King. Then Tungdil sees his only chance to persuade the dwarves to forge the fire blade, and also applies, although he is not even sure that he is a fourth at all.

Balendilín Einarm, Gundrabur's advisor, encourages Tungdil in his plan, as Gandogar intends to go to war against the Elves. The king of the fourth is influenced by his mentor Bislipur, who only pretends to be a fourth, but in truth belongs to the dwarf haters of the third. Balendilín calls on the two contenders to hold a competition. Since the opponents after several tasks (including a kind of egg run with a container full of liquid gold, some of which pours over Tungdil's hand, earning him the nickname "golden hand"), the two face each other, it has to be tied come to a decisive competition. Tungdil suggests an expedition to forge the Fire Blade and that whoever manages first to return with the weapon and destroy the traitorous Magus should ascend the throne of the Great King.

But the forge in which the ax can be forged lies in the fallen realm of the Fifth, which is now inhabited by orcs. However, the two contenders to the throne do not shy away from each other and each form a team of the best stonemasons from the second, the best smiths from the first and the best gem cutters from the fourth in order to be able to fulfill the task.

With the help of an underground tunnel system built by dwarves, which can be driven through on rails with carts, Tungdil and his friends quickly get north and finally reach the Dead Land. During this trip Tungdil meets the mime Rodario and his companions Furgas and Narmora, with whom they flee from the city of Mifurdania, which is attacked by orcs. Tungdil also falls in love with the blacksmith Balyndis Eisenfinger from the tribe of the First, who is supposed to help with the manufacture of the fire blade. In the realm of the fifth, the team can advance past the orcs to Esse Drachenbrodem . There she meets a group of undead dwarfs from the tribe of the Fifth, who have turned against the will of evil and have since defended the forge from the attacks of the orcs.

Only with the help of these undead, including their ancestor Giselbart Eisenauge, the combined forces of the four dwarf tribes and the acting talents of Rodario, Tungdil succeeds in forging the blade of fire and fleeing the realm of the fifth. They also meet Gandogar, whose crew was killed, and take him with them.

When the dwarves were initially unable to support the Elben Ålandurs, they decided to move on their own to the Schwarzjoch, where most of Nôd'onn's army was entrenched. There is a gigantic battle for the Schwarzjoch, in which the dwarves, the people who were almost annihilated in Porista, and finally the elves go into the field against the orcs and Albae.

Tungdil leaves the fire blade to Narmora, a half-albine, because the book says that only an enemy of the dwarves can lead it against Nôd'onn. But Narmora's attempt fails. On a bridge in the interior of the Schwarzjoch she is surprised by an Alb and loses the fire blade. Tungdil, who has watched the fight, makes his way through the fighting orcs to find the lost ax, but Bislipur gets ahead of him.

The traitor threatens Tungdil with the blade of fire and reveals to him that not only he, but also Tungdil belong to the tribe of the Third. He offers Tungdil to join the third party and thus avoid the annihilation that Nôd'onn will bring to the other tribes. But Tungdil does not want to accept that he actually belongs to the dwarf haters and throws himself into a fight against Bislipur, which ends with the death of the traitor.

When Tungdil finally holds the fire blade in his hands, the weapon suddenly starts to glow, and the dwarf realizes that he, truly a third party, is now the only one able to kill Nôd'onn.

With the prophecy that the sheltered land is now doomed, the dark magus goes there and the outcome of the battle turns for the better. Tungdil is hailed as a hero, but Balyndis' announcement that he will be his wife, of course, dwarfs all of that.

Volume 2: The War of the Dwarfs

After the Battle of Schwarzjoch, two armies of orcs move north: the orcs of the Dead Land are completely destroyed in a battle, while the Toboribor orcs flee to a desolated forest , a remnant of the Dead Land, and find black water there, which makes them immortal as long as you don't cut their heads off. The orc lord Ushnotz decides to found a new orc empire in the former empire of the Fifth, but the dwarves get ahead of him: the first, second and fourth send delegations of dwarfs to rebuild the empire.

Meanwhile, Tungdil experiences a setback: Balyndis' clan have chosen their Glaïmbar Sharpblade as their husband and don't want to know anything about Tungdil. Glaïmbar is elected the new King of the Fifth, and Tungdil is forced to keep his hatred against him under control.

When one hears of the approaching army of orcs, Tungdil sets out to the free, an underground community of dwarves made up of outcasts and opponents of the rigid regulations in the dwarf realms. The entrance to the realm of the free is through a lake. There Tungdil and his companions are attacked by Albae, all except Tungdil and Boïndil die. Tungdil also loses the Fire Blade to the Albae. In the realm of the free, Tungdil asks King Gemmil for help against the orcs and gets to know the surgeon Myrmianda Alabaster Skin. In the battle that follows, Tungdil saves Glaïmbar's life, meets Albin, who fights with his fire blade, but Albin escapes.

Meanwhile, the third, the mortal enemies of the other dwarves, bribe the Schwarzjoch and try to convince the mad King Belletain of the human kingdom Urgon to attack the fourth. An underground passage leads from the Schwarzjoch to the otherworldly land west of the First, where a meteorite recently fell, the impact of which damaged a large part of the Dwarf Empire. The third party uses pyrotechnics to stir up fear of the "danger from the west" announced by Nôd'onn.

Andôkai, the last maga looking for new famuli in the rebuilt Porista, discovers that the pregnant half-albine Narmora has magical abilities. Since she does not want to become her Famula voluntarily, Andôkai uses a ruse: She poisons Narmora's companion Furgas, blames it on muggers and forces Narmora to study magic in order to save Furgas. In an accident while using magic, Narmora loses her unborn son, but gives birth to a healthy daughter.

When the rumor arises of the avatars, fragments of the malicious god Tion, who want to destroy all evil and leave only scorched earth behind, the third strike: They claim to have a weapon against the avatars and force the other dwarves to abandon their kingdoms to give up and disappear into the land of the hereafter. At the gathering, Narmora, who has long since seen through Andôkai's wrong game, seizes the opportunity to seriously injure the Maga and secretly kills her in order to absorb her magical energy and take revenge for the death of her son and the poisoning of her companion.

Tungdil confronts the Free Dwarfs with the third when they want to take over the now-abandoned kingdom of the First, and realizes that they have no weapon at all. In the following battle, Myr, who has since made the Iron Covenant with Tungdil, is killed and Tungdil learns that she was a spy of the Third and the daughter of the King of the Third. However, when the news of the approach of the avatars, in whose existence the third party had not yet believed, is announced, the dwarves negotiate a ceasefire.

The Albae, whose empire has been besieged so far, ally with the rest of the armies of the Salvaged Land to defeat the Avatars. As it turns out, however, the avatars are only magi who, like the third party, make use of a legend to gain power over the safe land. Their leader is an ancient, powerful Elven teacher, an Eoîl. She travels to Porista, which is then besieged by the dwarves, humans and Albae. The Elves know about the ancestry of the Eoîl and therefore do not intervene. Despite the lost battle, in which Tungdil's friend Boëndal, among others, was fatally wounded, the Eoîl managed to use an energy wave that she called the Star of Trial to bring all of Tion's creatures, i.e. orcs, albae, trolls, etc., to the safe land destroy them and collect their energy in a diamond. Narmora and her daughter are also killed. Then Tungdil kills the Eoîl in order to deny her the immeasurable power of the diamond, in which the entire magic of the salvaged land is concentrated.

Mad Belletain has meanwhile thrown his army against the third fortress and almost completely wiped it out. The remaining third reconciles with the remaining dwarfs, and so the dispute between the dwarf tribes is settled. Boëndal dies of his wounds after the battle and is taken to the Blue Mountains to be buried like a real warrior and dwarf. Ingrimmsch uses the crow's beak , his old weapon, as a souvenir of him , since his two axes were buried under the ruins of the destroyed palace in Porista.

To prevent the diamond from falling into the wrong hands, duplicates of the crystal are made for the elven, every dwarf and human king and Tungdil Goldhand, once again hero of the battle. The original and the duplicates are hidden so that no one can ever get hold of the infinite power.

Tungdil travels to the now abandoned Alba area of Dsôn Balsur to retrieve the fire blade. He meets Salfalur, the third man who killed his parents, and defeats him in a tough fight. He decides to return to the abandoned Lot-Ionans tunnel and make it habitable again. He is soon joined by Balyndis, who was released by Glaïmbar because he knew who her heart belongs to. She also brings him the news that one of the duplicates has disappeared. This novel ends with the mutual promise of marriage.

Volume 3: The Revenge of the Dwarves

Nagsòr and Nagsar Inàste, the former rulers of Dsôn Balsur, flee from the star of the test in the former orc kingdom of Toboribor and fall into a rigidity there. Nagsar is desecrated by the surviving orcs and gives birth to five hybrid creatures from ork and alb. Furgas, who after the death of his wife and daughter by the Star of Trial, out of bitterness seeks the fall of the Safe Land, allies himself with two third parties and the Albae. With a diving island he discovers a new magical source in the lakes of Weyurn and creates magical armor for the five hybrid creatures and the newborn son named Aiphatón from Nagsòr and Nagsar.

A part of the Elves of Âlandur were converted by the Eoîl, kill the Elven prince Liútasil and begin to infiltrate the other kingdoms in preparation for the establishment of a kingdom of purity. They call themselves Eoîl Atár.

Balyndis gives birth to a son Tungdil, who drowns in an accident in a river. Tungdil blames himself and becomes addicted to alcohol out of grief.

Five years after the Battle of Porista, the hybrid beings begin to hunt down the Eoîl diamond, as Nagsòr believes that he can use his help to resurrect his sister Nagsar, since the artifact is immeasurably powerful. The underground, dwarves from the otherworldly, steal some of the fake diamonds that were made to cover up the location of the original.

The events call Tungdil on the scene, who must first be "cured" of the grief of his son by his friend Boïndil. On a visit to Âlandur, the two become suspicious of the Elves who send envoys to all kingdoms, supposedly to find out whether the other races are worth sharing their knowledge.

Meanwhile, Rodario discovers the diving island in search of his friend Furgas and frees Furgas, who pretends to have been held captive by the third party.

A council of all kings and queens decides to secure the remaining diamonds in a fortress with an army, but the diamonds are stolen by the hybrid beings during the transfer. Tungdil finds a badly wounded elf on the outskirts of Âlandur, apparently being pursued by his kind, and takes him away. In addition, Tungdil manages to initiate negotiations with the underground, a dwarf people who live outside the Salvaged Land, who finally reveal to him that the diamond is a keystone to the Black Gorge, from which, if the absence of the diamond were noticed, terrible creatures streamed out.

Tungdil and his friends set off with a force to conquer the diving island. Furgas disappears and is believed to be dead, two of the hybrid beings are killed. With the help of the new magical spring it is possible to revive the petrified Magus Lot-Ionan. He heals the found Elf, whereupon Tungdil learns the truth about the Atar.

The Ubariu, orc-like creatures from the otherworldly land and friends of the underground, help with the conquest of Toboribor and the unmasking of the Atar, who then slay Gandogar, the great king of the dwarves. As a campaign of revenge, Ginsgar Ungewalt leads a dwarf army against Âlandur and destroys the Elves almost completely. Nagsòr flees into a tunnel that was supposed to lead from Weyurn to the otherworld to get more beasts, but is not yet finished. There he is put to battle by Tungdil and his companions. Nagsor kills Tungdil and all of his companions one by one. When only Lot-Ionan remains, who has by far not had the strength of earlier days since his resurrection, the spirit of the dead Nudin appears to the Magus. In his distress, Lot-Ionan agrees to merge his spirit with the nudins. Through the power he gained, he finally kills Nagsòr and then finds out, when he resuscitates and heals Tungdil and the others, that he can even raise the dead with his new power. Since Tungdil has lost his blade of fire, he forges his new weapon Bloodthirsty from a sword of the Alb .

When Ginsgar Ungewalt allows himself to be proclaimed the new Great King after the campaign against the Elves, the opinion of the dwarves is divided. The dwarf rulers want to engage Tungdil as a mediator, but Tungdil is of the opinion that they have to take care of it themselves, because he is tired of the constant quarrels and wants to go to the hereafter without the intention of ever returning. He also dissolves the brazen bond with Balyndis.

The path of Tungdil and his friends leads them to the Black Gorge, about fifteen days' march northeast of the Salvaged Land, in order to close it again with the help of the diamond. But Furgas, believed to be dead, was faster and has already shown the creatures the way out, and so there is a huge battle, while the Goda, Boïndil's future wife, puts the diamond in his holder, as she can also, in a certain way, master magic, and thus restore the barrier. Tungdil remains missing, but his friends do not believe in his death.

Volume 4: The Fate of the Dwarves

250 years have passed since Tungdil disappeared. The salvaged land is ruled by the Albae under the leadership of Aiphatón (their emperor and son of the two inextinguishers) and the Dson Aklán (three mighty Alba warriors), the magician Lot-Ionan, the dragon Lohasbrand and the Kordrion. The second tribe of dwarfs was almost exterminated, except for those who hide in the underground cities with the free dwarfs. The rest of the dwarf tribes hold out against the occupiers, with the exception of the third, who initially fight with the Albae. Boïndil and Goda have had several children in the meantime. Two can use magic, and the third child, Boëndalin, is an excellent warrior. One day, the diamond that powers the protective wall around the Black Gorge splinters and goes out. An army of monsters prepares to storm the fortress while Boïndil and his fighters build a defense. The Kordrion, a huge dragon-like creature, also appears, followed by a dwarf in night-black Tionium armor. Boïndil rushes towards him, because he cannot believe that Tungdil can be the leader of the horrors. But before a fight can start, the strange dwarf drives the Kordrion away with a thrust of his sword bloodthirsty in the eye. Ingrimmsch alone is certain that Tungdil is in front of him.

When a figure appears that Tungdil knows from the Black Gorge, he makes it clear to his companions that they will not hold out against this enemy. So Boïndil and the alleged Tungdil go on a "crusade" through the Salvaged Land to force the magician Lot-Ionan to fight with them against the figure from the black gorge. With a group of dwarves he moves against the Kordrion, the magician Lot-Ionan and the Albae. On their way through the country they meet the mime Rodario, who is descended from the incredible Rodario, a Maga, and the freedom fighter Mallenia, who descends from King Mallen. It turns out that the dragon Lohasbrand, who rules the kingdom of Weyurn and holds the actual Queen Wey XI prisoner, is already dead and his vassals (the Lohasbrander) have kept this a secret from the people so that they can continue to use power.

In the former town of the former Famulus of Lot-Ionan, Balyndar (the son of Balyndis, Queen of the Fifth), Slîn (the best crossbowman of the Fourth), and Ingrimmsch find the once-lost Fire Blade again. Tungdil leaves them to Balyndar.

They travel together to the realm of Lot-Ionan, where the Albae Emperor is already leading an attack against the Magus. They get to the Magus' source of energy, where they meet two of his famuli. They defeat them and learn that Lot-Ionan has traveled to the land of the Albae to destroy the empire. Again the companions set off. You meet the Magus in the capital. Tungdil persuades his foster father to support her. After a successful campaign, Tungdil finally leads the troops of the salvaged land into battle against the hordes of the otherworldly black gorge. This fight also succeeds and he destroys his former teacher, the dwarf magus of the otherworldly. Then he destroys the Black Gorge once and for all. Subsequently, however, Tungdil is killed by an underground woman who thinks Tungdil is an illusion. She hits Tungdil in the heart with the fire blade and is killed by Slîn at the same moment by a bolt in her heart. You will never know if it was the real Tungdil Goldhand. But the secure land and all its inhabitants can now finally live in peace again. Boïndil is elected king of the tribe of the Second, he is also offered the dignity of high kingship, but he rejects the latter.

Video game implementation

The Bremen developer studio King Art developed a computer game for PC, Xbox One , PlayStation 4 , Mac and Linux based on the first novel . The game's release date was December 1, 2016. Contact with the author Markus Heitz was made through an employee of the company who previously worked on the design of a card game for “The Dwarfs”. The game was revealed in July 2015 through a so-called " leak ", first presented to the public at Gamescom 2015. On September 1, 2015, a crowdfunding campaign was launched with the aim of making the game bigger and better, for example through a multiplayer mode .

The plot follows that of the first book in the series and places familiar places and people in the foreground. In this role-playing game, the player takes control of Tungdil and accompanies him on his journey through the safe land. Little by little, he gathers familiar companions, explores familiar places from the books and fights tactical battles against great hostile powers - up to four heroes fight literally hundreds of orcs, ogres or other creatures of Tion.
