During the bomb attacks in Mumbai in 2006 on July 11, 2006, seven bombs detonated in close succession in the Indian metropolis of Mumbai , which the terrorists had placed in the passenger cars of fully occupied suburban trains during the evening rush hour. Indian security forces also defused an eighth explosive device. According to official figures, the attacks killed 209 people and injured at least 714 others.

The attacks

The bombs detonated in the local trains of the main line (Western Line) in the west of Mumbai. The first explosion occurred at 18:24 IST and the following six within eleven minutes until 18:35, so during peak hours in the transport of the city where many people on the way home from work were. The bombs were in first class - compartments of trains have been placed, even in the southern part of Mumbai, the Church Gate neighborhood in the center of the city and at the end of the Western Line. The explosions occurred near the Matunga Road , Khar Road , Santacruz , Jogeshwari , Mahim , Borivali and Bhayandar regional train stations , where two bombs exploded.

backgrounds

The bombings came just hours after a series of grenade attacks in Srinagar , the largest city in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir , in which eight people, including six Indian tourists, were killed and 35 injured. Security authorities suspected a connection between the two events and assume that the Islamist terrorist group Laschkar e-Taiba , which operates from Pakistan , is responsible for the attack. The Indian Ministry of the Interior is examining whether there is a connection with the Kashmir conflict.

Also on the basis of the date, consideration was given to establishing a connection with the terrorist network Al-Qaeda . Like these attacks in Mumbai, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA and the Madrid train attacks (March 11, 2004) were carried out on the eleventh day of the month.

On July 21st, police announced the first arrests related to the bombings. The three arrested belong to an Islamist student group. In total, over 300 suspects were questioned in the first few days after the attack.

In 2013, Abdul Karim Tunda was arrested as an alleged mastermind.

The telephone networks were overloaded. Vilasrao Deshmukh , the Chief Minister of Maharashtra , called for calm. Deshmukh promised the relatives of every person killed 100,000 rupees (approx. 2000 euros ) as compensation, and those injured should receive up to 50,000 rupees.
