David Elias Heidenreich (born January 21, 1638 in Leipzig , † June 6, 1688 in Weißenfels ) was a German poet , playwright and translator of the Baroque period .

Life

The poet was a son of the Leipzig lawyer Tobias Heidenreich and his wife, a daughter of the book printer-poet Gregor Ritzsch . Although he pursued a legal career following his father, his poetic talents were revealed early on as a maternal inheritance. After the death of his father, the thirteen-year-old was accepted into the house of the mayor and poet Christian Brehme in Dresden . He later attended high school in Halle (Saale) and in 1655 he enrolled at the law faculty in Wittenberg .

Even as a student, he made a living through translations and occasional poetry. After completing his studies, he went to court service in Weißenfels. In 1672 he was accepted into the Fruitful Society with the nickname "The Willing One" . He made a career at court as a court and consistorial councilor, and his numerous plays were premiered there. Heidenreich's "Geistliche Oden" (1665) were set to music by the Schütz student David Pohle .
