Bonifaz Vogel OSB (born May 1, 1912 in Rehau (Monheim) , Donau-Ries ; † August 1, 2004 ) was a Benedictine monk and from 1959 to 1982 abbot of the Münsterschwarzach am Main Abbey in Lower Franconia.

Life

He was baptized in the name Placidus Vogel, which he received from his godfather - his uncle Plazidus Vogel . Two years later he was elected first abbot of the re-established Benedictine abbey of Münsterschwarzach .

After graduating from high school in 1932, he entered the Benedictine order in Würzburg and was given the name Bonifatius. After studying philosophy and theology in Rome and Würzburg, he was ordained a priest on March 13, 1938. After the abbey was closed by the National Socialists in 1941, he was interned in the Kreuzberg monastery and worked in pastoral care in Nordheim before the Rhön until the end of the war . Abbot Burkhard Utz appointed him prior of Münsterschwarzach in 1946 , and he taught at the monastery high school.

On June 12, 1959 Bonifaz Vogel was elected 68th abbot (3rd abbot since 1914) of Münsterschwarzach and consecrated on July 11th by Josef Stangl , Bishop of Würzburg. His motto is: in bonitate et justitia (In goodness and justice).

During his tenure, he gathered over 400 monks in his monastic community who were also active in the branches in Waegwan ( South Korea ) and Peramiho ( Tanzania ). He expanded the grammar school, today Egbert grammar school , into a full grammar school with school and boarding school. At the end of the Second Vatican Council he campaigned for the renewal of choral prayer in German and brought the previously separate choirs of Fathers and Friars together to praise God together. He was deputy to the Archabbot of the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien .

On October 1, 1982, he announced his resignation; Father Fidelis Ruppert was elected to succeed him.

Bonifaz Vogel died on August 1, 2004, and found his final resting place in the Bonifatius Chapel of the Münsterschwarzach Abbey Church .
