The Boom Festival is an international music and culture festival in the municipality of Castelo Branco , Idanha-a-Nova in Portugal . The concept of the Biennale consists of the crossing of different art forms, such as music , painting , sculpture , video art , cinema , installations and theater , and is known worldwide.

The festival has been canceled for 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers assure that all tickets are valid for the alternative date July 22nd - July 29th 2021.

development

The Boom Festival has taken place every two years since 1997, with electronic music such as psytrance , acidhouse and progressive music in the foreground, but the multidisciplinary character is crucial. Originally planned as a psytrance event, only two areas were available at that time, a dance floor and a chill-out area. The Boom now includes a “Sacred Fire” stage for world music , acoustic sets and live bands. In 2008, the Funky Beach Stage, Alchemy Circle and Liminal Village were added to the program to showcase more contemporary electronic music genres including house , deep tech , acid house , downtempo and techno . In addition to the musical expansion, the influence of other media also grew in 2010, including an art gallery , natural sculptures, street theater , fire dance , yoga , films and meditation . Boom Festival is the largest biennial, culture, world music, transformation and psytrance music event taking place in Europe every two years, as well as one of the most famous transformation culture festivals in the world.

Principles

According to the organizers, the focus of the Boom Festival is to develop a sustainable ethos and offer a wide range of art and culture beyond the entertainment industry. The priority is collaboration, community, closeness to nature and awareness development . The Boom Festival is considered to be the largest psytrance event in Europe. It leads to contact between people from different cultural regions and encourages the discussion of ethnic stereotypes. The festival is multicultural and attracts over 30,000 people from 152 nations; over a million fans have gathered in various social media. The Portuguese police registered around 80,000 people in 2018.

Unlike other international festivals of this size, it is free from sponsorships and commercial advertising. Although this is generally seen as a good strategy, some advocate a compromise to bring ticket prices down from the current (as of 2020) 230 euros.

In addition to the boom, the makers have been organizing the ZNA Gathering Festival in the original birthplace of the Boom Festival since 2017 , which also takes place every two years.

environment

In 2004, the Boom began a series of projects to become more environmentally friendly. This includes the development of chemical-free toilets, the treatment of wastewater through biotechnology, the use of wind and solar energy, recycling and the offering of cleaning kits (including pocket ashtrays and garbage bags). In March 2010, the United Nations Environment Program invited the festival to join the United Nations Music & Environmental Initiative (M&E) project.
