Booty Wood

Mitchell W. "Booty" or "Bootie" Wood (born December 27, 1919 in Dayton (Ohio) ; † June 10, 1987 there ) was an American jazz trombonist who, according to Allmusic in Duke Ellington's band, "humorous, effective and exuberant solos with the plunger damper contributed ”.

Live and act

Wood began his career as a professional musician with Snooky Young in the late 1930s . In 1938/39 he played with Chick Carter's Dixie Rhythm Boys, 1940/41 with Jimmy Raschel, then with Tiny Bradshaw and Lionel Hampton . During World War II he played in a band in the United States Navy with Clark Terry , Willie Smith and Gerald Wilson ; after the end of the war he returned to Hampton. The first recordings for Decca Records were made with his orchestra in New York in 1944 . From 1947 he worked with Arnett Cobb , 1948/50 in the orchestra of Erskine Hawkins . He has also recorded with Milt Buckner , Ernie Fields and Willis Jackson .

From the early 1950s he played in the Count Basie Orchestra , but then worked for several years outside the music business at the Post . From May 1959 he played in the Duke Ellington Orchestra , where he took the place of John Sanders and formed the trombone set with Britt Woodman and Quentin Jackson . He also appeared on albums such as The Nutcracker Suite, Peer Gynt Suites and Piano in the Background (1960); as a soloist he is u. a. heard in " C Jam Blues " (on Blues in Orbit ). He performed with Ellington at the Monterey Jazz Festival . During this time he also recorded with Ellington musicians such as Paul Gonsalves ( Ellingtonia Moods and Blues ), Johnny Hodges , Harry Carney and Jimmy Hamilton . He stayed in the band until the end of 1960, but returned briefly to the Ellington Orchestra in 1963 and then worked again in the orchestra or in the band continued by Mercer Ellington in the early 1970s until Ellington's death .

In 1979 Wood appeared as a member of the Basie Band at the Montreux Jazz Festival ( On the Road ) and was on its recordings with Joe Turner / Eddie Cleanhead Vinson ( Kansas City Shout ), Ella Fitzgerald ( A Classy Pair , 1979), Sarah Vaughan ( Send in the Clowns , 1981) and a television appearance with Frank Sinatra . In the mid-1980s he left the basie band and withdrew from the music business.

Under his own name he recorded the album Hang in There with an all-star cast for Master Jazz Recordings in 1960 , including Harold "Shorty" Baker , Johnny Hodges , Paul Gonsalves , Ram Ramirez , Aaron Bell , Oliver Jackson , Vic Dickenson , Dicky Wells and Sir Charles Thompson belonged. In 1978 the album Chelsea Bridge was created in Paris for Black & Blue Records (with Cat Anderson , Norris Turney , Harold Ashby , Raymond Fol , Aaron Bell and Sam Woodyard ). In the field of jazz he was involved in 138 recording sessions between 1951 and 1984. a. also with Earl Hines (1968), Snooky Young (1971), Cootie Williams (1976), Cat Anderson (1978) and Cleveland Eaton (1980). In later years he returned to his native Dayton, where he died in 1987. He is buried in the Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum in Dayton.
